
Province's under-18 girls earn Challenge Cup gold

MONCTON - New Brunswick captured a gold medal in the girls under-18 division of the Atlantic Challenge Cup hockey tournament Monday at the Tim Hortons 4-Ice Centre.
New Brunswick advanced to the gold medal game in four of the tournament's five divisions, but the province's girls under-18 team was the only one to come away with a win Monday, a 4-3 victory over Nova Scotia.
Susie Larocque, Kim Deschenes, Alyssa Sherrard and Leanne Gallant scored for New Brunswick. Katelyn Brewer, with a pair, and Roberta Carson replied for Nova Scotia.
Alysha Manderson picked up the win in net. Carmen MacDonald took the loss.
The four-day tournament featured teams from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and Newfoundland and Labrador competing in the boys under-14, under-15 and under-16 and girls under-15 and under-18 divisions. Nova Scotia won three of the five divisions.
P.E.I. came up with a 2-0 win over New Brunswick in the girls under-15 gold medal game. Sarah Steele and Allyssa Ferguson tallied for P.E.I. while Jessica Cameron recorded the shutout. Chelsey Hodges was the New Brunswick goaltender.
The boys under-15 gold medal game saw New Brunswick fall 5-4 to Nova Scotia. Taylor Burke and Liam O'Brien each scored twice and Devon Oliver-Dares added a goal for Nova Scotia. Riley Hughson, with a pair, Devin Doucette and Anthony Dion countered for New Brunswick.
Netminders were Brandon Whitney for Nova Scotia and Remi Brun for New Brunswick.
Nova Scotia was a 6-4 winner over New Brunswick in the boys under-14 gold medal game. Nova Scotia received two goals from Michael Lyle and singles from Lucas Zwaagstra, Brendon Duff, Nathan MacKinnon and Cole Murphy. Oliver Cooper, Zachary Whitlock, Joel Michaud and Mackenzie Brown were the New Brunswick marksmen.
Winning goaltender was Jason Ellis. Heath Bubar suffered the loss.
Nova Scotia downed P.E.I. 5-2 in the boys under-16 gold medal game. In the bronze medal game, New Brunswick blanked Newfoundland and Labrador 7-0.
Riley Dickie, Aidan Kelly, Dylan Jones, Alexander Scully, Peter Trainor, Sammy Maguire and Bryce Milson scored for New Brunswick while Chad Lavigne added three assists and Phillip Fife had two. Robert Steeves registered the shutout.
