Saints skate past Vikings
SAINT JOHN - The St. Malachy's Saints improved to 2-0 in the AAA boys Southern Hockey Conference with a 7-2 decision over the Harbour View Vikings. Jordan Tracey and Rob Gale each connected twice for the winners while Isiah Nice, Ben Collins and Josh Mowatt added singles. Alex Kielty scored both goals for the Vikings. Thursday's contest between Hampton and Kennebecasis Valley was postponed because KVHS could not field a team because a large number of players are out sick.

Huskies' captain earns AUS honour
HALIFAX - Guiseppe Scichilone of Gondola Point, captain of the Saint Mary's Huskies men's soccer team, was named the winner of the Atlantic University Sport's Student-Athlete Community Service Award. The six-foot-two senior fullback is an academic all-Canadian with a 3.29 grade-point average. Off the field, Scichilone is a member of the Saint Mary's Athlete's Council, participates in the Excel Child Care Programming at Inglis St. Elementary in Halifax, and has volunteered with the 65 Roses for Cystic Fibrosis Run in each of the past three years. He also co-ordinates intramural soccer at Saint Mary's and hosts open mic sessions at the university lounge for students on campus in his spare time.

Bantam girls converge on capital
FREDERICTON - Most of the strongest teams in New Brunswick, along with two solid entries from Nova Scotia, will gather at the Nashwaaksis Middle School Field House this weekend for the second annual Northside Minor Basketball Association Bantam Girls Invitational. The Northside Lions A and B teams will be co-hosting the 15-team event, which runs Saturday and Sunday at the field house's three courts. The field also includes the A and B sides for the Fredericton South V-Reds, Moncton and Riverview, along with Kennebecasis Valley Basketball Association A, Sussex, Perth, John Caldwell Golden Knights of Grand Falls, St. George, Cole Harbour and the Shooting Stars of Windsor, N.S. Play begins at 8:50 a.m. Saturday. Sunday's play will feature games at 8:45, 10:10 and 11:35 a.m., 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. The latter will be the championship game.

Premium Drys shade Mooseheads
QUISPAMSIS - Rob Peterson scored twice to pace the Premium Drys to a 3-2 win over the Mooseheads in Quispamsis Moosehead Oldtimers Hockey League action. Jeff Furlong rounded out the Drys' scoring while Rick Frenette and Scott Conway replied for the Mooseheads. In other action Steve Hynes' four-goal effort helped the Alpines hold off the Alpine Lights 6-2. Stephane Fortin and Pat Bagley added singles for the Alpines while Jason Arnold took care of the scoring for the Alpine Lights.

Touch leagues to crown champs
SAINT JOHN - The touch football season wraps up Saturday with four championship games in the men's and women's Saint John Touch Football leagues. At 9:30 a.m., Jakes Blue takes on Kacey's in the women's B final at Shamrock Park. The men's B final follows at 11 a.m. with the Rage going up against Ten Pennie. The women's A final at 12:30 p.m. features Ka-Booms against Gold Rush. In the men's A final the Outlaws and the Raiders collide at 2 p.m.

Central Bull Dogs capture Atom title
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Central Bull Dogs are the Fred O'Brien Cup champions after downing the St. Stephen Silverados 18-1 in the Fundy Minor Football Association's Atom Division championship game at Shamrock Park. The Bull Dogs got two touchdowns from Alex Smith and another from Matt Palmer to finish the season undefeated at 7-0-1. The lone tie, 0-0, came during the regular-season meeting with the Silverados. The two-time champion Bull Dogs outscored their opposition 144-13 this season.
