St. Mac's opens year on ice with big win

ROTHESAY - The St. Malachy's Saints started off the 2009-10 Southern Conference high school girls hockey season with a 10-1 decision over the Rothesay Red Hawks Monday.

Danielle Ring and Lindsay MacKinnon each connected three times for the winners while Brittney Ring added two goals.

Lorie Graham and Abby Galbraith also scored single markers for the Saints in the season-opening contest in the 10-team loop.

Katrina McKinnon replied for the Red Hawks.

This evening, Kennebecasis Valley hosts Simonds at 6:15 p.m. while Harbour View entertains St. Stephen in Grand Bay.

In Southern Conference boys hockey action, it was a night for comebacks.

In Saint John, the Hampton High Huskies rallied from a 3-0 deficit to edge the Simonds Seabees 4-3.

Adian Beech connected twice for the winners, including the tie-breaking goal in the third period.

Alec Morrow and Ben Shephard scored one apiece for the Huskies.

Devin Doucette, Morgan Sullivan and Mike James scored for the Seabees.

Tim Boudreau earned the win goal in his first high school contest while Ryan Miles suffered the loss.

In Grand Bay, the St. Stephen Spartans spotted the Harbour View High Vikings a 3-0 advantage before responding with a 7-3 triumph.

Jeff Brown and Alistair Covey each scored twice in the win while singles went to Damian Gallant, Dalton Parks and Ryan Caswell.

Alex Kelly, Jonathan Cosman and Pat Seely replied for Harbour View.

Tonight, Rothesay faces Kennebecasis Valley at 8:15 p.m. while St. Stephen entertains Simonds at the Border Arena, beginning at 7 p.m.
