
Four N.B. teams go for gold

MONCTON - Hockey New Brunswick has four provincial teams vying for a gold medal today at the 14th annual Atlantic Challenge Cup underway at the Tim Hortons 4-Ice Centre in Moncton.
The provincial boy's under-15 and under-16 squads will go for gold after they both ended round robin play at 2-0-1, while the girl's under-17 team vies for a banner after going undefeated through three games and the girl's under-15 squad goes for a title after finishing weekend action at 2-1-0.
The girl's under-17 squad will face Nova Scotia today at noon. They dropped Nova Scotia 4-2 in round-robin action Sunday. Heather Braun, Jenna Scott, Janik Robichaud and Sam Bujold scored for New Brunswick while Josee Leger, Jessie Deschenes, Gabrille Poirie and Jodie Dupere pitched in with one helper each. On Saturday, Robichaud had one goal and two assists as New Brunswick downed Prince Edward Island 4-2. Leanne Gallant, Katherine Richard and Dupere also added goals while Poirier had two assists and Sarah MacDonnell and Gallant had one. The squad opened the competition, part of Hockey Canada's Program of Excellence, by blanking Newfoundland and Labrador 5-0. Poirier connected for a hat trick while Anissa Gamble and Richard added singles. Brittney Dow had two assists while Sam Bujold, Corinne McDonald, Robichaud, Dupere and Richard each had one.
The provinces' under-15 girl's squad takes on Nova Scotia today at 12:15 p.m. in its title match. New Brunswick fell 2-1 to Nova Scotia Sunday, with the lone marker coming from Alisha Gilbert off a feed from Andrea Dinan. The squad edged P.E.I. 1-0 Saturday thanks to a late-game goal by Catherine LeBoeuf assisted by Marie-Jo Pelletier. Pascal Daigle recorded the shutout. On Friday, the girls defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 3-1 as Caitie McCabe, Leanne Bariault-Caron and LeBoeuf connected for goals. Katie Haslett, Alyssa Whalen, Brittany Poitras, Maggie Levesque, Pelletier and LeBoeuf had assists.
The New Brunswick under-16 boy's team meets P.E.I. today at 3:15 p.m. for its gold medal match. The squad dropped Nova Scotia 6-1 Sunday using two markers from Francis Breau and singles from Matt Bursey, Brett Malone, Patrick Levesque and Remi Bois. Helpers came from Brayden Wood, Anthony Dion, Ryan Caswell, Malone and Breau. On Saturday, New Brunswick and P.E.I. played to a 3-3 tie in which Ryan Langan, Brandon Parsons and Bursey scored goals and Jared DeMerchant, Brett Gorman, Caswell and Malone had assists. The squad opened the tourney with a 4-0 win over Newfoundland and Labrador. Kent Small and Dion had a goal and one assist while Bursey and Caswell had single markers. Malone and Levesque contributed with one helper each.
The boy's under-15 club will face Nova Scotia at noon to try for gold. The two squads battled to a 3-3 tie Sunday, with New Brunswick using goals from Oliver Cooper, Alexander Bradley and Shane Dallaire. Matthew Murphy, Michael Hache and Cooper had assists. New Brunswick blasted P.E.I. 8-1 on Saturday as Hache, Cooper and Ryan Donovan led the charge with two goals apiece.
Scott Fenwick and Tyler Johnson rounded out scoring while helpers were notched by Stephen Johnson, Zachary Whitlock and Dallaire with two each and Bradley and Murphy with one apiece.
On Friday, Newfoundland and Labrador went down 5-1 to New Brunswick as Fenwick led with two goals while singles came from Noah Zilbert, Donovan and Johnson. Micheal Poirier, Mitchell Vanderlaan, Zilbert and Bradley had assists.
The New Brunswick under-14 boy's team will face Prince Edward Island today in the division's bronze medal game at 9:15 a.m. after going 0-2-1 in round robin action this weekend. Christopher Bamford had the lone goal for New Brunswick off a feed from Francois Boissonnault as the squad lost 9-1 to Nova Scotia Sunday.
Martin Druet and Daniel Gallant each scored with help from Ryan Bishop late in the third as New Brunswick rallied to a 3-3 tie against P.E.I. Saturday. Colin MacSween had an unassisted goal early in that match.
The squad opened the tournament Friday with a 7-3 loss to Newfoundland and Labrador.
Logan Saunders notched an unassisted goal while Tyler Burns scored off a feed from Alex Estabrooks, who also had a marker that was assisted by Matthew Grey.
