Softball

Players have until Sunday for draft

GRAND BAY-WESTFIELD - Players have until Sunday to register for the River Valley Oldtimers Softball League Draft, to take place Monday. This year the league has opened up the draft to include players who do not live in the Grand Bay-Westfield area. Players must be at least 35 years old to register. Baseball

Midget AAA team holding final tryouts

SAINT JOHN - The final tryouts for the Saint John AAA midget baseball team will take place tonight and Saturday at Barnhill field. Players 16-18 years old are eligible to tryout. Tonight's practice runs from 5-7 p.m., while Saturday's is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information contact Marc Doiron at 672-1288.

Rugby

Riverhawks blank Sussex Sonics

SAINT JOHN - The Rothesay Netherwood Riverhawks got three tries from Adam Cann en route to a 41-0 win over the Sussex High Sonics in Southwest Conference AAA boys high school rugby action. Duncan Lutes added two tries for RNS while George Aldous and Mark Pedersen added single tries. Cann rounded out the scoring with three conversions.

Tennis

Tennis leagues accepting players

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Team Tennis League and Shamrock Park Doubles Club are accepting memberships for the 2009 season. Team tennis, which costs $70 per player, will run from Tuesdays from May 19 to Aug. 11. Wednesdays are the rain dates. The doubles club runs Thursdays from May 21 to Aug. 13, with Sunday as the rain date. All games are to be played at Shamrock Park tennis courts with home teams supplying new balls for each match. High school

RNS downs Huskies and Red Hawks

HAMPTON - Maria Patterson scored two tries to lead the Rothesay Netherwood Riverhawks to a 22-0 win over the Hampton High Huskies in varsity girls rugby action. Gaelyn McMackin and Ayla Frank had single tries while Abby White added a conversion. In other action the Riverhawks downed the Rothesay High Red Hawks 17-5. White had a try and a conversion in the win while Emma Bailey and Anna Simonds added tries.

AAA boys

St. Mac's rolls to victory over Vikings

SAINT JOHN - The St. Malachy's Saints got two tries each from Walker Blizzard and Paul Carson and downed the Harbour View High Vikings 47-0 in boys AAA rugby action. Chris Reid, John Burnham and Ben Connelly added single tries. Connelly also contributed four conversions.

Hockey

V-Red Prospects travelling to Quebec

QUEBEC CITY - The V-Reds Prospects, a AAA girls under-12 hockey team comprised of some of the New Brunswick's top young players, will be travelling to Quebec City May 15-17 for the Quebec Bulldogs Tournament. The team has already competed in the Warrior Meltdown Quebec women's prospect tournament, going 2-1-1 in their division but failing to advance to the semifinal round due to goal differential. The V-Reds lost their opening game 2-1 to eventual tournament winner the Connecticut Yankees. Saint John native Chelsea Doiron scored the lone goal for the V-Reds while Hilary Cashin tended goal. In the V-Reds second game, they downed the Wave Platinum of Ontario, 2-1. The V-Reds' goals were scored by Minto prospect Alex Raby and Doiron, with Cashin in net. The V-Reds downed the Montreal Junior Lions 2-1 in their third game with Fredericton's Victoria Peterson and Perth-Andover's Chloe Perley scoring. Game MVP was V-Reds' goalie Jessie O'Leary, playing in her first full game in the nets as a V-Reds Prospect. The V-Reds tied the Montreal Ice Storm 4-4 in their final game.
