Pick of the week: Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival begins in Fredericton on Tuesday and runs till Sunday. The opening night gala, Tuesday, 8 p.m. at the Playhouse, includes performances by Bill Stevenson and Tom Easley, Emilie-Claire Barlow. Headlining the festival is five-time Grammy Award Winner Buddy Guy from Chicago, million-selling Brit pop stars Bloc Party, Georgia guitar-wizard Derek Trucks, Vermont's hot prospect Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Amsterdam's Ana Popovic, France's Nano, and the United Kingdom's premier jazz vocalist Sarah Jane Morris performing with long-time Sting guitarist Dominic Miller. Trio Arkaede with violinist Isabelle Fournier, flautist Karin Aurell, and pianist Julien Le Blanc, will be performing as part of the St. Andrews Arts Council's Summer Sounds series, 8 p.m., at the Van Horne Room, Fairmont/Algonquin Hotel, St. Andrews. The University of New Brunswick Conservatory is pleased to announce the formation of a new youth choir for students in Grades 6-12. This choir will be directed by Amber Bishop, local soprano soloist and music educator, and accompanied by Jennifer Bettle. The Conservatory also hosts the Fredericton Youth Orchestra, a Junior String Ensemble and various student chamber music groups. It offers classes in Theory, Sight-Singing, and Beginning Voice as well as private lessons in strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano, guitar and voice. Sunday: The inaugural Prince William Street People's Choice Charity Feast, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Prince William St. between Princess St. and King St., Saint John, will be shut down for event. In case of rain, it will be moved to the Long Wharf tents. Money raised through the feast will go to establish the Prince William Street Fund to immediately support three local non-profit initiatives: The Atlantic Coastal Action Program, Saint John; Chicken Noodle Soup Club; and Setting the Stage - The Campaign for the Saint John Theatre Company. Patrons get to choose who gets the cash - each ticket gives you a vote. The charity that receives the most votes will receive the largest share of money raised. Ticket holders will get to choose a delectable boxed meal - appetizer, entrée and dessert - from some of Uptown Saint John's great restaurants. The Carleton-Kirk Lodge nursing home will host a fundraising dinner theatre event at The Phoenix Dinner Theatre, Exmouth Street, Saint John, at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy a three-course dinner while watching the musical comedy 'Goin' to the Chapel.' There will also be an auction held during the intermission. Monday: The St. Andrews Film Society will be screening 'Once' (2007, 86 min, PG-13) at the W. C. O'Neill Arena Theatre at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome and admission is free, though a donation of $3 for members ($4 for non-members) is suggested. The film, an unusually innovative piece of musical cinema, is the story of a Dublin busker, played by Glen Hansard (lead singer of the Irish band The Frames). The NB Film Co-op begins the Fredericton Monday Night Film Series. The series presents limited release, independent foreign and Canadian films. Regular admission is $7 per screening. Do you enjoy singing? If so, consider joining Mount Allison's Choral Society. Conducted by Dr. Gayle Martin, the Choral Society is a choir of mixed voices with a membership of about 70 members. Singers include students at Mount Allison, faculty and staff members from the university community, as well as singers from the area.
