The Writers' Federation of New Brunswick hosts its 2010 Literary Competition

The Writers' Federation of New Brunswick welcomes entries for several writing contests within its 2010 Literary Competition. The competition is open to writers from across Canada.

The group offers prizes in categories of individual poems, short fiction and non-fiction. Individual poems can be no more than 100 lines in length. Short fiction has a 4,000-word maximum, while non-fiction must beless than 3,000 words.

The children's literature category features works written for children aged four to eight. There is a 2,500-word maximum.

Entry fee for individual poems, short fiction and non-fiction and children's literature is $15 for WFNB members, $20 for non-members.

The Sheree Fitch Prize for Fiction is open to youth, 14 to 18 years of age as of Jan. 1, 2010, who produce a work of fiction to a maximum of 4,000 words. Entry fee is free for members, $5 for non-members.

The Richards Prize, valued at $500, is awarded for a collection of short stories, a short novel or a substantial portion of a longer novel (not to exceed 30,000 words). The work must be unpublished although some individual stories may have been previously published. A manuscript entry fee of $35 applies.

There is also The Alfred G. Bailey Prize, also $500, awarded for poetry manuscripts not previously published, in whole or in part, in book/chapbook form. Length must be at least 48 pages. Manuscript entry fee is $35.

Previous winners may not enter in the category in which they won for two subsequent years. Writers who have professionally published a book in a specific category may not enter in that category.

Deadline for all entries is Nov. 30. Winners will be announced at the SFNB's WordSpring conference in May. For details, including rules, visit the WFNB website www.wfnb.ca or call 459-7228.
