Pick of the week: The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation hosts its annual Strathbutler Gala at the Capitol Theatre in Moncton on Thursday at 8 p.m. The gala is free and the public is invited. Shortlisted as finalists for the $15,000 Strathbutler Award are Luc Charette, Paul Mathieson, Glenn Priestley and David Ulmholtz. The gala will feature presentations on the work of all finalists. Kristyn Cooper, a Fredericton metalsmith, will be presented with the $2,000 Nel Oudemans Award. The foundation will also award two Fred Ross Scholarships of $4,000 each to Brandon Hunter of Simonds High School and Daniel Roh of Rothesay Netherwood School. * Today: 'Acadie in song, from yesterday to today' is the theme chosen by the Choeur de Soulanges for a spring concert celebrating its 35th anniversary at Bernard-Poirier Theatre, Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne, in Fredericton, at 8 p.m. The choir and guests will perform favourites such as 'La mouette aux yeux noirs,' 'Un million de fois je t'aime' and 'Hymne à l'espoir.' A wine and cheese reception concludes the festivities. Tickets - $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors - are available at the door and from Choeur de Soulanges members. Heavy Metal - The Fredericton International TubaFest holds a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall on the UNB campus. The 30 tuba and euphonium players will be joined by Dennis Miller, tuba with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Mark Carlson, euphonium with Sotto Voce Quartet, Gregory Irvine, tuba with the P.E.I. Symphony Orchestra, and Nathalie Lepine, piano with the Quebec Conservatory of Music. Music ranges from Baroque to modern. Tickets, $10, are available at the door.
The School District 8 String Program holds its annual Perennial Sale at the Family Centre behind St. Rose School, 700 Manawagonish Rd., Saint John, from 9 a.m. to noon. A selection of perennials are available as well as baked goods. Proceeds support string music.
Wai-Chung (Rachel) Kwan performs in 'Book Re-View,' a unique and interactive musical evening in her new project 'Love To Share' presented by the Saint John Arts Centre, 20 Hazen Ave., Saint John. Dance Fredericton presents 'The Black and White Ball' with ballet, jazz, hip hop and modern dance performances at the Fredericton Playhouse, 686 Queen St., Fredericton, today at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Playhouse box office, 458-8344.
* Sunday: Sheri Burhoe hosts an artists trading cards creation workshop from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Hooper Studios, 177 Kennebecasis River Rd., Hampton. Cost is $40 with a materials fee of $10. Register by calling 650-3333.

Today is the last day to take advantage of the early bird discount for summer adult workshops provided by edVentures Fredericton. The early bird discount gives participants a 15 per cent reduction on a workshop fee if they register on or before June 1. edVentures provides fun, informal and engaging workshops, taught by experienced instructors, in engaging learning environments. Partners in the edVentures Fredericton program include the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Kings Landing Historical Settlement, Charlotte Street Arts Centre and the University of New Brunswick Arts Centre. * Monday: Ingrid Mueller Art Concepts, 117 York St., Fredericton, presents a display of oil paintings featuring the landscape of New Brunswick by Saint John painter and past Greenarm - Beaverbrook Studio Watch Winner Jonathan Johnson. Catherine Hale: The Edge of Silence and Susan Wood: Finally Spring are also showing until June 3.
* Tuesday: The Saint John Men's Chorus, under the direction of David Mitchell, performs its spring concert 'Spring into Summer' at 8 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 668 Manawagonish Rd., Saint John. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased from choir members or at the door.
Film Pix presents 'Che' at Empire Studio 10 Cinemas, in Saint John. 'Che' explores the guerilla exploits of the ideologically fuelled Latin revolutionary Ernesto 'Che' Guevara. * Thursday: The Shakespeare Society of Saint John holds auditions today, Friday and Saturday for 'Antony and Cleopatra' at Shakespeare Space, 3rd level, Brunswick Square. The Fredericton Male Chorus perform at Wilmot United Church at 7:30 p.m. This 24-voice men's choir, directed by Steven Peacock and accompanied by pianist Doris Nicholson, will present three- and four-part choruses in the sacred and classical traditions, as well as folk songs, sea shanties and songs of love. The concert will also feature performances by Virginia Leiter, the Wilmot Senior Choir and several vocal soloists from the Wilmot community - Amy Bourne, Dorothy Frazier and Neil Thorne. * Friday: Backstreet Records presents For the Sake of the Song at 124 Germain St., Saint John, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Three to five singer-songwriters are featured each week. Music lovers of all ages welcome.
Klausen Gallery, 106 Prince William St., Saint John, features featuries 'Mediterranean Moments,' paintings by Jocelyn T. Bichard. An opening reception occurs from 5 to 8 p.m. All welcome. For more information, call 693-9976.
Saint John High School students presents 'The Bridge of Humanity,' an art auction at Opera Bistro, 60 Prince William St. Viewing begins at 7 p.m. with auction following at 8 p.m. Students are seeking funds to support Brick by Brick, an initiative of Free the Children that builds primary schools in impoverished nations. Admission, $25, includes a non-alcoholic beverage, hors d'oeuvres and dessert, as well as the enjoyment of live classical music. The art featured is by local artists. The NB Provincial Music Festival takes place in Woodstock today and Saturday. The festival features 50 young musicians from across the province who have been recommended as their local festival representatives by the adjudicators at those festivals. The NB Federation of Music Festivals, the umbrella organization for the 11 local festivals around the province, sponsors the NB Provincial Music Festival. The public is welcome to attend all performances. The Woodstock High School Theatre and the Woodstock Baptist Church will be used as venues for the junior and intermediate levels of competition. * Saturday, June 6: Early Music Fredericton hosts the 3rd annual Fredericton Baroque Music Festival on the theme 'Order and Chaos!' today and Sunday. Today, the Seasons Baroque Ensemble presents 'Scales of Justice.' Sunday, the York Early Music Ensemble teams up with Lintuhtine Melodies to present 'Love & War.' The chaos of the battlefield is contrasted with soothing songs of love. Both concerts take place at Christ Church Cathedral, 168 Church St., Fredericton, and begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door: $25 adults/$20 seniors/$10 students. Hooper Studios, 177 Kennebecasis River Rd., Hampton, hosts a basic silver jewelry-making workshop instructed by Trudy Gallagher. Learn the basics including design, planning, sawing, piecing, filing, sanding and polishing. There is a $10 tool use fee and materials cost ranges from $25 to $50. Cost of the workshop is $150. Also at the gallery, Peter Manchester offers a botanical watercolour workshop that encompasses basic instruction, composition and materials. Cost is $75. 'An Evening by the River - Uniting Voices and Cuisine' takes place at the Brundage Point River Centre, Grand Bay-Westfield, at 6 p.m. The evening consists of a dinner, silent auction, music by Westfield United Church Choir, skits and more. A limited number of tickets are available for $25 per person and must be purchased in advance by calling 757-1011 or 757-8461.
* Ongoing: Amy Ash is featured at Trinity Galleries in Saint John. Ash is a Hampton-based artist and teacher who first debuted at Trinity in November 2008.
Saint John Arts Centre presents new exhibitions by Mary Young, Patty Pendleton, Jean-Frances and Colin H. Smith. The City Gallery features new works by Carol Colicutt and WhiteFeather. The gallery, located at 20 Hazen Ave., is open Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free.
The Beaverbrook Art Gallery features 'Writing on the Wall: Nela Rio and Salvador Dalí' and 'Canadian Folk Art from the Collection of Susan A. Murray' until June 7 and 'Beyond the Garden Path: Tapestry Art by Susan Vida Judah' until June 14. Also showing is 'Effections: We Need to Talk' by Immony Men,' organized by Gallery Connexion. It shows until June 21.

The UNB Art Centre, Memorial Hall, UNB Fredericton, showcases contemporary artworks in an exhibition of New Brunswick Art Bank Acquisitions. The UNB Art Centre is located at 9 Bailey Dr., University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. Admission is free.
