Johnson enjoys impressive night
SAINT JOHN - Dave Johnson defeated Lindsay Bell 12-0 to highlight action in the On and off Court Saint John Fall Team Tennis League. In other action, Jeff Kincade beat Peter Hanson 10-2 and Evan Arsenault defeated Mark Moland 8-4. The league standings are Arseneault 16, Johnson 15, Hanson/Kincade 14, Moland 13 and Bell 0.

Saints practice set for today
SAINT JOHN - The St. Malachy's senior girl soccer tryouts are slated for today from 6-7:15 p.m. at Shamrock Field. All interested players are invited to attend. For more information, contact Al Blois at 333-6793.

Ringette
Two NBers make cut
OTTAWA - Joelle Proulx of Dieppe and Jessica Snowdon of Moncton have advanced to the next phase of tryouts for the Canadian under 19 Ringette East team after the coaching staff made its first cuts August 24. Forty-seven players from Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces were invited to the camp. Proulx, Snowdon and Julie-Eve Finn of Chaleur were the three New Brunswickers invited to the initial tryout.
Softball
Tourney slated for Grand Bay
GRAND BAY-WESTFIELD - The second annual Wooden Bat Classic men's orthodox softball tournament will take place Sept. 5-7 in Grand Bay. The cost is $200 per team. Wooden bats will be supplied to tournament organizers. Pitching styles are bowling or figure eight only. For more information contact Brad Jennings at 647-3643.

Midget AAA girls set tryout dates
WOODSTOCK - Tryouts for the Female Midget AAA Zone A Hockey Team for the 2008-2009 hockey season, will take place at the Woodstock Civic Centre. This zone includes players from the areas of Boiestown, Doaktown, Oromocto, Fredericton, Grand Lake, York North, York West, Nackawic, Woodstock, Perth-Andover, Plaster Rock, Florenceville, Grand Falls, Edmundston and St.-Quentin. The tryout fee is $60. The tryouts are scheduled for Tuesday at 7:15 p.m., Sept. 6 at 1:30 p.m., Sept. 9 at 7:15 p.m. and Sept. 13 at 1:30 p.m. Please register in advance by calling 459-8850 or 470-9062 after 6 p.m. or by e-mail to trina@nbu.ca by August 31st.

Fundy registrations begin tonight
SAINT JOHN - Registrations for the Fundy coed football begin tonight at 6 p.m. at the Lord Beaverbrook Rink. The sessions are for co-ed flag football for ages 6-9. The session runs until 8:30 p.m. tonight and continues Friday, also from 6-8:30 p.m. at the LBR. Also there will be a coaches meeting Wednesday at the New Brunswick Community Campus in Saint John. Atom coaches will meet at 6 p.m., followed by peewee at 7 p.m., bantam at 8 p.m. Anyone interested in working with the club this season is welcome to attend.

Quinlan claims provincial title
RIVERVIEW - Jacob Quinlan of Rothesay defeated Felix LeBlanc of Moncton 6-1, 6-3 to win the under 12 boys division of the New Brunswick Junior Closed Provincial Tennis Championships. Other winners were Hielke Moore of Fredericton (under 10 boys), Shawn Comeau of Nigadoo (under 14 boys and under 16 boys) Patrick Hache of Beresford (under 18 boys), Melika LeBlanc of Moncton (under 12 girls) and Nathalie Murphy of Dieppe (under 16 girls and under 18 girls).
