Indeed, the Bath, N.B.-raised Buzz Hargrove was feted by no less than the elite of the country's corporate and political establishment, including four premiers. Those present included Wallace McCain, Frank McKenna, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, Toronto Mayor David Miller and Troy Clarke, president of GM North America.

The money raised at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre was donated to Eva's Initiatives, a group that helps homeless youth.

In August Hargrove will retire from the presidency of the Canadian Auto Workers union he has led since 1992.
