High School: Simonds junior varsity team downs Oromocto 66-31

SAINT JOHN - The Simonds High junior varsity boy's basketball team continued their winning ways at the Seabees' annual tip-off tournament Friday, dropping Oromocto High 66-31.

Brad Titus led the charge with 19 points while Evan Robert added 10 and Andrew Hubbard tossed in nine as the Seabees improved to 2-0 in the tourney.

They play their final round robin match today at 12 noon against St. Malachy's High. The junior division final will follow at 3 p.m.

The Saints' junior squad is also 2-0 heading into the final day of action after picking a pair of wins Friday. The Saints used a 22-point game from Andrew Dornan to drop Harbour View High 59-34. Drew Camick and Tyler Pettinger each added nine in the winning effort.

Mike MacLeod led the Vikings with 12 points and Lucas Loughead added nine as Harbour View dropped to 0-2. They face Oromocto High today at 10:30 a.m. for their final round robin match.

St. Malachy's took its second win from Oromocto High, using 10 points from Pettinger to prevail 59-27 over the Blues. Matt Smith contributed with nine points in the winning effort, which dropped OHS to 0-2.

Meanwhile, in the senior boy's division, the host Seabees dropped to 1-1 after falling 60-40 to Hampton High. The Huskies were led by Nick McRae with 19 points and Craig Titus with 12.

Kayden Roy tossed in 16 points for the Seabees, who face St. Malachy's High at 1:30 p.m. to finish round robin play.

The Harbour View Vikings senior squad slipped to 0-2 after suffering a 62-42 loss to St. Mac's Friday. Malachy McDonough led the Saints with 15 points while Eric Rodrigues tossed in 12 and Andrew Fitzpatrick added 11. Cameron Montford powered the Vikings with 17 points and Alex Langille added nine.

The Vikings play their final round robin contest today at 9 a.m. against the Hampton Huskies.

The senior division final takes place at 4:30 p.m. today.

Girl's JV AAA hoops

Sydney Debortoli tossed in 14 points for St. Malachy's High as the Saints dropped Sussex High 68-24. Kate Maguire added 12 points for the Saints while Shauna Gass pitched in for 10. The Sonics were led by Ellen Sharp with six points and Brianna Waugh with five.

Meanwhile, the Saint John Greyhounds used 18 points from Lauren Bower to down the Rothesay Red Hawks 68-43. Kelsey Duplessis tossed in 12 points for the winners while Tori Hardt added 11. The Red Hawks were led by Melanie Bishop with 26 points while Allie McLaughlin and Christina Brock each added six.

Girl's varsity AAA hoops

Brittany Mallory's 29 points helped the Sussex Sonics to an 81-60 decision over St. Malachy's High. Madeline Belding also pitched in 23 points for the winners, while Leanne Davis led the Saints with 14 points and Laura Taylor added 11.

Boy's JV AAA hoops

Andrew Dornan connected for 20 points as the St. Malachy's Saints downed Sussex High 66-58. Tyler Pettinger tossed in 18 points for the winners while Alex Phiney added 14. The Sonics were led by Jake Folkins with 18 points, Blair Doull with 16 and Nick Huggard with 11.

Boy's varsity AAA hoops

The Sussex Sonics were powered by 17 points from Sean deWinter and 13 from Mark Folkins as they downed the St. Malachy's Saints 68-36. Malachy McDonough led the Saints with nine points while Eric Rodrigues tossed in eight.

Boy's hockey

The Sussex Sonics and Hampton Huskies grinded to a 3-3 tie in Southern Conference boy's AAA high school hockey action. Kevin Armstrong, Evan Gass and Colin Urquhart notched goals for Sussex while Craig Wanamaker, Dan Gamble and Ben Shepard scored for the Huskies.

Girls Hockey

Gwen Whitters scored twice as Kennebecasis Valley downed St. Stephen 6-2. Lauren Perrin, Lindsay Phillips, Emily Spear and Carly McLong added singles. Elizabeth Phillips registered two assists. Courtney Grant and Mary-Kate MacDougall replied for St. Stephen.
