Seabees cruise in tip-off tourney

SAINT JOHN - Simonds swept the first games of its 2009 tip-off senior and junior varsity basketball tournament Thursday. In junior varsity play, Simonds downed Harbour View 45-32. Brad Titus led the winners with 10 points while Evan Roberts added nine and Matt Ingraham eight. Mike MacLeod scored 14 for Harbour View. In the senior varsity game, Kayden Roy netted 27 points as Simonds eared a 51-42 triumph over Harbour View. Cameron Montford and Cole Fowler each scored 10 points for Harbour View. Action continues today and Friday at Simonds High School.

Legends tour

Stephane Quintal added to roster

SAINT JOHN - Stephane Quintal, who played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League, has been added to the Montreal Canadiens alumni roster slated to play a pair of games in New Brunswick next week during the NHL Legends Maritime Tour. Martin Lafleur, the son of Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur, will also skate in the games alongside his father and a number of former Habs, including Patrice Brisebois and Stephane Richer. The team will play in Fredericton's Aitken Centre Tuesday and then make the trip to the Lord Beaverbrook Rink in Saint John for a 7 p.m. match the following night. In Saint John, tickets are available at the Lord Beaverbrook Rink, Portland Pub and Vito's restaurants. For more information, call 977-1131 or e-mail nhllegends@gmail.com. Coaches, umpires earn top awards

OTTAWA - Several New Brunswick coaches and umpires were recognized recently at a Baseball Canada Convention. Following are the award recipients - David McManus (Lifetime Umpire Achievement Award Baseball Canada); Andrew Higgins (Baseball Canada's Umpire of the Year Award); Mike Donahoe (Baseball Canada's New Brunswick Grassroots Coach of the Year); and Gerry Leblanc (nominated for Baseball Canada and Major League Baseball Volunteer of the Year award).

Sabres win two straight

QUISPAMSIS - The Kennebecasis Valley Sabres blanked the Hampton Huskies 4-0 in bantam B hockey action on the strength of a two-goal effort from Riley MacDonald and singles from Justin Armstrong and Nathan Walsh. Will French posted the shutout. In another game, the Sabres shaded the Saint John Flames 3-2 on goals by Brody Stanley, Brady McCarthy and Walsh. Connor Simon and Kyle Dobson replied for the Flames.

Atom hockey

Thunder thump Saint John

SAINT JOHN - The Lancaster Thunder defeated the Saint John Flames 6-2 in atom AA hockey action. Bayne Campbell scored two goals for Lancaster while singles came from Jake Estabrooks, Tyler Hooley, Kate Nice and Bailey Sullivan. Matthew Palmer potted a pair for the Flames.

Howard to sign new book Saturday

FREDERICTON - World champion curler Russ Howard will be in Fredericton Saturday to sign and discuss his new book Curl to Win. Howard, a 2006 Olympic gold medalist in Italy, will be at Westminster Books in Fredericton at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The two-time world curling champion's book has penned what is called the essential guide for all curlers - from novice to elite.

New Brunswick drops to 4-6

BURLINGTON, Ont - Quebec's Simon Hebert stole two points in the 10th end as Team Quebec shaded Team New Brunswick 6-4 at the Canadian Mixed Curling championship in Burlington, Ont. The loss dropped the New Brunswick team of Mary Jane McGuire, Megan McGuire, Jared Bezanson and Jeremy Mallais to 4-6.

Boxing

Saint John host Ontario fighters

SAINT JOHN - A full card of boxing is slated for Saturday at Exhibition Park as members of the host Golden Gloves Boxing Club entertain seven fighters from Ontario in a the first of a home-and-home series between the clubs. The main event features Adam Black of Saint John against Canadian champion Steve Franjic while Adam Goguen of Saint John will fight Canadian bronze medalists Ryan baulk of Ontario in the top fight of the undercard. The doors open at 6 p.m. with the first fight slated for 7 p.m.
