SAINT JOHN - Woman faces fraud charges

A 32-year-old west side woman entered not guilty pleas to a pair of fraud charges this week during a provincial court appearance before Judge Anne Jeffries. Angela Elizabeth Dunn, 32, of Molson Avenue faces an indictable count of defrauding Manufacturers Life Insurance Company (ManuLife) of more than $5,000 and a summary charge of defrauding Clark Administrative Consultants Ltd. of under $5,000. No details were given. The judge adjourned both matters to 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 20 for the setting of a trial date.

Addict gets 30 days in jail

SAINT JOHN - A 41-year-old woman who didn't have a criminal record until her substance abuse problems caught up with her earlier this year, was sentenced to a further 30 days in the slammer and placed on probation for one year by provincial court Judge Alfred Brien after pleading guilty to five charges - two of them for simple possession of hydromorphone (Dilaudid). Shera Scott was also fined $1,000 for driving while impaired and prohibited from driving for one full year. Noting she had already been sentenced to 10 and 14 days in jail, respectively, for two earlier breaches of court undertakings and had pleaded guilty to a third, the judge said he had no confidence that Scott would abide by the conditional sentence her lawyer had requested. He said it could amount to setting her up for a fall.

Driver handed the minimum

SAINT JOHN - Troy Robert Dorbyson, 37, of Patterson Street was handed the minimum fine of $1,000 and ordered to pay a victim fine surcharge of $150 after pleading guilty before Judge Alfred Brien to operating a motor vehicle while legally impaired. The incident occurred Feb. 18 on Somerset Street.

Trial date awaits legal aid decision

ST. STEPHEN - A local man charged with breaking a windshield and threatening to kill two people must return to St. Stephen provincial court Dec. 1. On Oct. 13, Karl Arthur Middlemiss, 48, of St. Stephen pleaded not guilty to committing these offences July 1 in St. George. Judge David Walker adjourned setting a trial until Tuesday to allow Middlemiss time to apply for legal aid. The application was still in process Tuesday, so Walker granted another adjournment.

Trial set for break at home

ST. STEPHEN - Chance Tyler Beney, 18, of Back Bay will return to court Dec. 2 for trial on charges related to a break into a Heathland home. Judge David Walker set the date in St. Stephen provincial court Tuesday after Beney pleaded not guilty to charges of break, enter and theft and to wearing a mask while committing an offence on Oct. 19. At a hearing last week, Walker denied Beney bail, so he appeared in court in custody Tuesday. The judge remanded him until the trial.
