SAINT JOHN - Co-accused not on same page
Stanley Wayne Cormier, 37, of Blue Rock Court was quick to enter a pair of guilty pleas to charges of entering a west side dwelling Wednesday night with the intent of committing an indictable offence and with assault on its owner. But his co-accused, Christopher Cormier, 21, of Grandview Avenue pleaded not guilty before Judge Anne Jeffries charges of entering the dwelling, assaulting a second man with a table leg and breaching his probation. No details of the incident were given in court, by Sgt. Pat Bonner of the Saint John Police Force said two men entered a house at 164 St. James St. West around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. He said one of the victims received facial injuries and was treated on the scene. The judge ordered preparation of a pre-sentence report prior to sentencing Stanley Cormier at 10 a.m. on Jan. 19. He was released on conditions. Chris Cormier was remanded to jail until Friday, when a bail hearing is scheduled.
Parole violation nets 60 days
SAINT JOHN - A parolee who pleaded guilty to being unlawfully at large after failing to return to a halfway house, as required on Sept. 13, had 60 days tacked onto any time he's now serving during a Tuesday court appearance before provincial court Judge Anne Jeffries. The court was told Matthew Gordon Minard, 30, was already back behind bars after having had his parole revoked. Minard, who had been granted parole on July 2, signed himself out of Hart House on Carleton Street on Sept. 13, but never returned. His curfew was at 9 p.m. Police didn't catch up to him until he was arrested outside a Taylor Avenue residence on Oct. 18. "There were too many rules," he complained to Judge Jeffries. "If you don't like the rules, then don't break the law," she shot back.
Man's remorse helps his case
SAINT JOHN - Thanks to a positive pre-sentence report that referred to him as being honest, open and remorseful for his actions, Jeffrey Michael Curran, 25, of Pidgeon Terrace, won't be doing jail time for a June 24 assault to which he entered a guilty plea. During Tuesday's sentencing, the court heard how the intoxicated man had sucker-punched his male victim in the face outside the Rum Jungle on King Street. His victim was transported to hospital for treatment, but beyond bruising, escaped any serious injury. In suspending passing of sentence, provincial court Judge Alfred Brien placed Curran on probation for eight months and ordered him to complete 30 hours of community service by Dec. 31 and pay a victim fine surcharge of $100. "I'm sorry for what I did. I apologize," Curran told the court. "I don't drink anymore."
