Charges pending in cigarette seizure

SAINT-LÉONARD - RCMP seized more than 23,000 contraband cigarettes during a raid of a Saint-Joseph-de-Madawaska residence last week. A 53-year-old man was arrested in the raid. The cigarettes are believed to have been intended for sale on the local market. Charges are pending.

Natural Resources employee honoured

BATHURST - A staff member at the Bathurst office of the Department of Natural Resources has been honoured for her contribution to the mining industry. Nicole Hatheway received the Ken Whaley Award recently at the New Brunswick Exploration, Mining and Petroleum conference. The award is presented annually by the New Brunswick Prospectors and Developers Association to someone who has given meritorious service to the mineral exploration industry. Hatheway began as a summer student at the department's Bathurst office and took a job full time after graduating from Mount Allison University. A citation read at the ceremony stated, "There have been many prospectors and others that have been helped through the government red tape by Nicole. She greets everyone with a smile and no matter how complicated the problem is, she will help you through it."

New moose fencing to be erected

CAMPBELLTON - Fifteen kilometres of new moose fencing will soon be put up in the Campbellton area, Transportation Minister Denis Landry has announced. After discussions with police and the Department of Natural Resources, the Duffs Lake area was identified as a hot spot for collisions with moose. Further details of the project will be included in the province's upcoming capital budget.

Contract awarded for jail project

DALHOUSIE - A contract has been awarded for foundation work at the new jail in Dalhousie. Quebec-based Pomerleau Inc. will receive $1.1 million-contract for the job. The Dalhousie Correctional Centre, located on Miller Boulevard, is scheduled to be complete by spring 2011. In total the project represents an infrastructure investment of more than $16 million. Donald Arseneault, MLA for Dalhousie-Restigouche East, said the project will benefit the community hard-hit by a string of plant closures. It will create more than 150 jobs during construction, 47 new permanent positions when the facility opens, and about $400,000 in annual property tax revenues to the municipality.

Breakfast benefits youth facility

BATHURST - A community breakfast was held Tuesday by anorganization that helps troubled youth. The Portage Atlantic facility at Cassidy Lake is a residential treatment centre for youth between the ages of 14 and 21 with serious substance abuse problems. The bilingual Portage program offered to youth is based on the therapeutic community model, which through positive peer pressure and role modelling, helps youth increase their self-esteem by learning positive coping mechanisms.

Bathurst Santa parade set for Friday

BATHURST - Bathurst's annual Santa Claus Parade is being held this Friday. The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. from Bathurst High School. The parade runs along King Avenue, across St. George Street, up Douglas Avenue, right onto Main Street and ends at the corner of Main and King. The event culminates with the lighting of the community Christmas tree.
