Rifles misplaced at shooting range

HAMPTON - Hampton RCMP are requesting the public's assistance in locating two rifles that were misplaced while a hunter was at the Department of Natural Resources firing range on the Ravine Road on Saturday afternoon. Cpl. Pat Cole of the Hampton RCMP said just before 4 p.m., the rifles went missing. They are described as a Remington Model 4 (.270-calibre Winchester) with scope, and a Remington Model 7 (7mm-08 calibre) along with a rigid camo-coloured rifle carrying case.

Custody

Working visa of accused expires

HAMPTON - A domestic assault has landed an American man, who has been living in Hampton, in the custody of Immigration Canada. Cpl. Pat Cole of the Hampton RCMP said a Philippine woman who resides and works in Hampton contacted police on Sunday of an alleged assault she bore the day before at the hands of her husband, also a Philippine with American citizenship. While the matter was resolved by way of a peace bond, the husband was arrested and placed in custody with Immigration Canada because his work visa was expired for over a month and was not renewed. His wife's visa is not set to expire for nearly another year.

Window busted by rock thrower

SUSSEX - A vehicle travelling on Maple Avenue in Sussex on Saturday night had its side window busted when someone threw a rock at it. Sgt. Bruce Reid of the Sussex RCMP said the mischief complaint was received by police just before 9:30 p.m. The driver was not injured. There are no suspects but police continue to investigate.

Theft

Snowblower taken from Gateway Mall

SUSSEX - Someone who may not have been looking forward to shovelling this winter got away with a snowblower from a store at the Gateway Mall in Sussex. Sgt. Bruce Reid said on Sunday around 1:45 p.m., during the store's open hours, police were called to the business where someone had cut a cable securing a snowblower and took off with it. Police are reviewing store video in an attempt to identify a suspect.

Investigation

Police looking into hit-and-run

HAMPTON - Police in Hampton are looking for suspects in a hit-and-run that occurred in the parking lot at the Hampton Tim Hortons on Saturday just before 3 p.m. Cpl. Pat Cole of the RCMP said an unknown vehicle backed into a parked one, then fled the scene without reporting it.

Accident

Driver rolls vehicle, treated for injuries

NORTON - A 24-year-old man was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital Friday after he fell asleep behind the wheel around suppertime. Sussex police say just after 5 p.m. his vehicle left Route 1 near Norton and rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof. The driver was wearing his seat belt.

Recreation

Playground won't open until spring

HAMPTON - The old saying goes, "build it and they will come." But in Hampton's case, they don't want them to come - just yet. The town recently erected a new playground in its town square, but it's not open to the public. The town was hoping to see children playing on the structure this fall, but rains have played havoc with the plan, Mayor Ken Chorley said. The town's works department was delayed in installing the rubber surface under the structure when heavy rains caused massive flooding throughout the community and eroded several roads. The mayor said the playground will not open until spring.

Permits

Building starts take huge drop

HAMPTON - The value of building starts in Hampton is down by nearly 50 per cent from last year. So far this year, the town has issued $3.97 million worth of permits. Last year, it issued $6.69 million in the first 10 months of the year. Mayor Ken Chorley said the biggest drop came in terrace dwellings. Last year, the town saw 14 new garden homes built in the community; this year there were none. The town has issued 15 building permits for single-family homes, down from 19 last year.

Donation

Town puts priority on its food basket

HAMPTON - The Town of Hampton isn't playing Scrooge this year - it has simply decided not to send out Christmas cards so it can make a $200 donation instead to the Hampton Food Basket. It's been a practice of the town for a number of years to make the charitable donation instead of mailing out seasonal greetings.

Parade

Hampton puts call out for more floats

HAMPTON - The town's annual Santa Claus Parade wants more float entries. Individuals, organizations and companies interested in entering a float in the Nov. 28 parade are asked to contact the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce by calling 832-2559 or emailing hacc@nb.nbnet.ca. This year, Santa is making his appearance earlier in the day. The parade, which traditionally was held in the evening, will begin this year at 4 p.m. It also has a new route, starting at Hampton High School and ending at Hampton Elementary School. Other years, it started at the elementary school. The changes were made to accommodate Hampton High's production of Dracula, which is being staged the same evening.
