Grizzlies have no answer for Iverson
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Allen Iverson experiment with the Memphis Grizzlies is over. The Memphis Grizzlies announced Monday in a statement that the team has ended its one-year contract with the 10-time all-star and former league MVP in what it called a mutual agreement. Iverson began an indefinite leave of absence on Nov. 7 to deal with a personal issue after playing only three games with Memphis, all in California. General manager Chris Wallace says they agreed Iverson is stepping away from the game to focus on those personal matters. Wallace says the Grizzlies wish Iverson the best.

Canadian improves world ranking
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Stephen Ames has moved back into the top-50 in the world golf rankings after his victory at the Children's Miracle Network Classic. The Calgary golfer vaulted 22 spots up to No. 49 in the rankings, which were released Monday. Tiger Woods continues to hold the top spot while Mike Weir of Bright's Grove, Ont., is the top Canadian in 34th. Ames had tumbled to 71st in the world rankings prior to earning the fourth win of his PGA Tour career on Sunday. After a mediocre season, the 45-year-old was thrilled to get a victory in the final event of the year. "This is like icing on the cake," said Ames. "The year was average. This just kind of adds up a little better, more to where I should be."

Former NBA star detained in Germany
BERLIN - Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has been temporarily detained in Germany after a hotel said he skipped out on a US$5,100 hotel bill. Senior prosecutor Juergen Bauer said Monday that Rodman had played in a "USA Legends of Basketball" exhibition game in the western town of Trier and threw a party afterward at his hotel. Bauer says the game's organizers had agreed to pick up the tab for Rodman's overnight hotel stay, but not an additional $5,100 for beverages consumed at the party. When Rodman left the hotel Monday morning without paying the tab, the hotel director contacted the police. Police found Rodman's stretch limo on the highway and detained the star. Bauer says Rodman then paid the outstanding bill along with an additional $2,500 to dismiss possible legal proceedings.

Hall of Fame trainer dies from cancer
LOS ANGELES - Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, who won the 2003 Belmont Stakes with Empire Maker, has died after a long bout with cancer. He was 68. Jockey agent Ron Anderson said Frankel died early Monday at home in Pacific Palisades. Frankel had been running his stable by phone for most of the year while he was undergoing treatment. Frankel began his training career by turning lowly claiming horses into stakes winners, and wound up with earnings of more than US$200 million. "He started at the bottom and worked his way to the top of our profession," said Anderson, who booked riders on horses trained by Frankel over the years. "He was a very kind-hearted person that had people that worked for him for 20, 30 years, which is almost unheard of around the racetrack." Frankel enjoyed his greatest success this decade, winning four consecutive Eclipse Awards as the United States' leading trainer from 2000-2003, and five overall. He oversaw a string of horses, with Khalid Abdullah-owned Juddmonte Farms as one of his major clients.
