Smoke

City testing sanitary sewers

Where there is smoke doesn't necessarily mean there is fire. CBCL Limited has been hired by the city of Saint John to carry out smoke testing of sanitary sewers in West Saint John for possible defects in the lines Thursday and today. The information obtained from the study is to be used to improve the sewer system. The smoke is non-toxic and creates no fire hazard, according to a notice sent out by the city's municipal operations department. The smoke used for this testing should not enter homes or businesses unless the plumbing is defective or the building floor drains have dried up. If smoke does enter a home or business notify on-site crew leader Daniel Houghton at 651-1931 or to contact any member of the smoke crew in your area.

Environmentalist wants test results

An environmentalist is asking the city for information about the level of contamination at the former sugar refinery site on the waterfront. "Lacking any information regarding the nature of this contamination and any hazardous materials in the soil, we are concerned over possible impacts on the harbour and marine environment, the surrounding area and public health," David Thompson wrote in a letter to common council. The former sugar refinery site is at the centre of a proposed land swap between Irving Oil and the Saint John Port Authority that would allow the company to build its headquarters on the waterfront. The port authority has warned it won't accept ownership of the property unless metals that contaminate the site are cleaned up.

Two face charges after stops

Two people face impaired driving charges after being stopped by police late Wednesday and overnight. The Saint John Police Force received a tip about a possible impaired driver travelling east on Highway 1, and a 42-year-old man was stopped at about 10:30 p.m. Police pulled over another man, who is 23, on Carmarthen Street at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Both men will appear in court at a later date to answer to the charges.
