NEW YORK - Bewitched by low ratings, Paul Gross's new TV show Eastwick has been cancelled.

The program, which featured Gross as a mysterious tycoon who appears to manipulate a trio of beautiful women in a New England town, won't be on the air beyond its first 13 episodes, ABC said.

Based on the John Updike novel The Witches of Eastwick and a 1987 film version, the show - which also stars Rebecca Romijn - has been haunted by low ratings. It attracted fewer than five million viewers last week.

Gross became known to TV audiences for his role as Const. Benton Fraser in the '90s show Due South. He went on to star in the acclaimed series Slings and Arrows.

In recent years Gross has gravitated toward the big screen, helming and starring in Passchendaele, which opened the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival.

Recently, he's been working on the comedy Gunless, about a U.S. gunslinger who finds himself beset by odd, peace-loving townsfolk when he blunders into a small Canadian town.

Co-starring Gross's old Due South co-star Callum Keith Rennie as the villain, Gunless is set for release in March 2010.
