Report recommends advisory body

FREDERICTON - The Conservation Council of New Brunswick has released its latest report "Traditional Ecological Knowledge and the New Brunswick Forest: A Conversation." The report recommends formation of an advisory group on traditional ecological knowledge that can provide input into public forest management. The council says that Including First Nations in genuine decision-making processes will allow the sharing of traditional forest knowledge that is essential for the protection and restoration of the province's native forest.

Fatality

Inquest to probe forestry death

WOODSTOCK - An inquest into the death of Stanley English will take place Nov. 16-20 in Woodstock. English, 46, died on Sept. 20, 2008, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, from injuries received after he was struck by a tree limb during a woodlands operation in Canterbury. Coroner Linda Hanselpacker and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses in order to determine the facts surrounding the death.

Fundraising

Internet offers new opportunities

FREDERICTON - Social networking sites and online donations offer new opportunities for non-profit organizations to raise funds, says Brian Kenny, minister responsible for the Community Non-Profit Organizations Secretariat. Kenny says non-profit groups can use technology to open the door to a powerful new medium and fundraising option. By being connected, he says they can define their organization, establish a presence, recruit volunteers, organize, interact, network, raise funds and monitor progress. He says websites, newsletters and social networking sites have become popular marketing and communication tools.
