Pick of the week: Opera New Brunswick presents its fall performance 'Topsy Turvy,' a concert of Gilbert and Sullivan's greatest hits today at 8 p.m. at Fredericton High School and Sunday at 3 p.m. in Brunton Auditorium at Mount Allison University in Sackville. Performers include Jessica McCormack, soprano, Christianne Bélanger, mezzo soprano; Graham Thompson, tenor; Peter Groom, baritone; Fredericton's Anne Marie Murphy, piano; Tim Turnell, who will host and narrate; and the Opera New Brunswick Chorus. Tickets for the Fredericton show are available from the Playhouse box office at 458-8344 or www.theplayhouse.ca. Tickets for the Sackville performance are available at Tidewater Books, 4 Bridge St., Sackville; La Guitare, 388 St. George St., Moncton; or at the door. * Today: The Shakespeare Society of Saint John presents a Renaissance Feast at 7 p.m. at Trinity Royal Room, Delta Brunswick Hotel. The event includes a four-course meal of fine cuisine from Shakespeare's table, along with some performance readings from the plays and musical entertainment. Ontario-based singer/songwriter Emm Gryner performs at Vintage Bistro in Hampton and at the Blue Olive in Saint John Monday. Gryner recently released 'Goddess' (Dead Daisy Records).

The UNB Art Centre offers a hands-on workshop led by Winnipeg artist Denise Préfontaine from 1 to 5 p.m. in conjunction with Préfontaine's exhibition 'Two Parts of Wonder.' The artist teaches fabric collage techniques with iridescent fabrics, beads and threads. Layering, stitching and textures will be explored with a focus on the organic process of creating. Participants will be introduced to various approaches to developing ideas and designs, and will then use provided materials to create their choice of a two-dimensional work or a mini-installation to take home. Trinity Anglican Church, 115 Charlotte St., Saint John, welcomes the re-opening of neighbouring Princess Street with several activities, including two 15-minute concerts by Roger Steed playing the Trinity Tower bells at noon and 12:30 p.m. For more information call 693-8558.

FrancoFête en Acadie music and song showcase continues at the Capitol Theatre in Moncton. The 10:30 a.m. show features Galant tu perds ton temps, Norbert Pignol and Geneviève Toupin; the 1:45 p.m. showcase features Gaële, David Marin, Marie-Éve Janvier, Jean-François Breau and Pascal Lejeune; and Misteur Valaire, Tricia Foster, Guillaume Arsenault, Denis Landry, Chloé Lacasse and Suroît finish the day off at the 7:30 performance. Trinity Anglican Church, 853 Main St., Sussex, presents an art show and sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Fredericton Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of David Adams, performs 'Mostly Pops!,' an evening of familiar and lively orchestral music, at Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton at 8 p.m. Orchestra member Grade 12 student Aaron Good will be featured soloist in F. David's Concertino for trombone and orchestra. Other selections are by Rossini, Grieg, Brahms, Kodály and J. Strauss. Tickets, $15 adult/$10 senior/$5 student, are available at Westminster Books, from orchestra members and at the door on the evening of the performance.

* Sunday: The Loisirs socioculturels de l'Université de Moncton presents 'Les rencontres qui chantent' at 8 p.m. at Moncton's Capitol Theatre.

The Fredericton Concert and Marching Band, under the direction of Heather Dunham, present a Remembrance Day concert with the Legion Men's Chorus (Margaret MacDonald, director) at Memorial Hall on the UNB campus, Fredericton, at 3:30 p.m. Freewill donations accepted. Early Music Fredericton presents 'Viaggio in Italia,' the first of its Voyages Series concerts at Gallery 78, 796 Queen St., at 3 p.m. 'Viaggio in Italia,' is a musical trip tracing the footsteps of some of Italy's greatest baroque composers - Frescobaldi, Castello, Scarlatti and Corelli. Musicians featured are Sari Tsuji (baroque violin) and Jonathan Addleman (harpsichord). Tickets, $25 adults/$20 seniors/$10 students. Subscriptions are available to all three concerts in series. * Thursday: Robert Michaels performs at the Capitol Theatre in Moncton at 8 p.m. Ranging in style from pop to flamenco, the Latin Jazz guitarist has won two Junos and achieved platinum and gold status with record sales.

UNB Reading Series in Fredericton features poets Jesse Ferguson and Vanessa Moeller at the art gallery in Memorial Hall at 8 p.m. Ferguson, a current PhD candidate at UNB, is the author of five chapbooks. He is launching his first full-length book this year, 'Harmonics,' with Freehand Books. Moeller, a UNB graduate, will be reading from her first book, 'Our Extraordinary Monsters.' All are welcome.

Saint John Art Club Paint A Chair Auction takes place at the Saint John Boys and Girls Club, 1 Paul Harris Dr. from 7 to 9 p.m. Twenty-five children's chairs, designed, painted and signed by members of the Saint John Art Club, will be auctioned. Funds raised support an art program for children. Joe Boyce will preside over the auction. For more information call 849-2833.

Nasty Shadows Theatre Co., in co-operation with Theatre UNB, presents Daniel MacIvor's 'Marion Bridge' at Memorial Hall, UNB Fredericton Campus, Thursday through Saturday beginning at 8 p.m. nightly. Lawtons Home HealthCare, in support of the Canadian Paraplegic Association (N.B.) Inc., presents the 19th Annual Art & Antique Auction at the Fredericton Inn. The evening features the works of well-known New Brunswick artists and an array of antiques and collectibles. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception, silent auction and dinner. This is followed by a live auction featuring auctioneer Hugh Cameron. Entertainment is provided by violinist Katherine Moller. For tickets, $40, call 462-9555.

* Friday: Backstreet Records presents For the Sake of the Song at 124 Germain St., Saint John, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Three to five singer-songwriters are featured each week. Music lovers of all ages welcome.

Ronald Rees signs copies of 'Grace Helen Mowat and the Making of Cottage Craft' at Coles, Brunswick Square, Saint John, from noon to 2 p.m.

The Beaverbrook Art Gallery hosts an evening of fine art and a nosing and tasting of rare single malt scotch whiskies at 6 p.m. Frank Scott, whisky connoisseur and general manager and co-owner of the Lunar Rogue is host. Tickets are $100 per person, which includes admission for one person, whiskey samples, a complimentary glass of white wine and assorted refreshments (bread, cheese, chocolate) to enhance the whiskey tasting experience. A $50 tax receipt will be provided for each ticket purchased. Tickets are available at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Self-Help Saint John Alumni hosts a Ten Thousand Villages Festival Sale featuring handcrafted home décor and gifts at St. Mark's United Church, 50 Dexter Dr. Purchases made during the sale invest in the lives of skilled artisans in Africa, Asia and Latin America, who receive a fair price for their work. The sale hours are Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The MacKenzie Project and Ennis perform at Imperial Theatre at 8 p.m. The MacKenzie Project is led by fiddler Roseanne MacKenzie (The Cottars). Ennis is a JUNO award-winning group with a unique contemporary voice, flavoured by deep roots and traditional Newfoundland influences.

St. Thomas University launches 'The Hundefräulein Papers' by Kathleen McConnell (Kathy Mac) at 3:30 p.m. in the Holy Cross House Conference Room, 101. 'The Hundefräulein Papers,' a collection of poems, emails, drawings, a recipe, an obituary and more, chronicles six years that Professor McConnell spent in Sambro, N.S., living with - and looking after - the dogs of Elisabeth Mann Borgese, ocean activist and youngest daughter of German novelist and Nobel laureate Thomas Mann. All welcome.

The newly created John XXIII Annual Lecture Series will begin its inaugural year at 7 p.m. in the Kinsella Auditorium, McCain Hall, St. Thomas University, with Michael Kelly, deputy editor of The Irish Catholic. He will speak on 'Reimagining Catholicism: An Irish perspective in the light of institutional abuse.' Free. All welcome.

Potter Darren Emenau's solo exhibition 'Alchemy' opens at Handworks Gallery, 12 King St., Saint John, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. The show features ceramic work in a range of shapes, surfaces and functions, including enclosed sculptural forms, flasks and customized bar decanters. Third Space Gallery/Galerie Tiers Espace, 42 Princess St., Saint John, presents 'Get Dressed with Goody B' from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition features artwork from the board members of the artist-run centre as well as a sneak peek at work to come in January from international artist Goody B. * Saturday, Nov. 14: To celebrate its 60th anniversary in a grand fashion, Jeunesses Musicales of Canada presents one of the most well-known and well-loved works in the opera repertoire: Jacques Offenbach's 'Les Contes d'Hoffmann' at 7:30 p.m. at LER Theatre, Dalhousie. La Famille Arsenault performs at the Capitol Theatre in Moncton in support of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The ECMA-multi-nominated group presents 'East Coast Kitchen Party.' Fiddles, guitars, mandolin, spoons, harmonicas, drums, congas, tambourine, step shoes, trick fiddling and comedy highlight the evening.
