The New Brunswick government says it has followed advice from safety experts to ensure vehicles transporting students to extra-curricular activities are as safe as possible.

Two mothers are upset because they say a small bus used to transport students to extracurricular activities at Bathurst High School is not fully equipped with winter tires.

Isabelle Hains and Marcella Kelly, whose teenage sons died in the crash of a Bathurst High School van, had alleged the 21-passenger vehicle used by Bathurst High only had winter tires on the back.

But the Education Department says that's not the case. Spokeswoman Valerie Kilfoil says the vehicle in question uses winter tires on the back and special ribbed tires on the front, as recommended by transportation experts.

Dave Hoar, an expert with Motion Design in Fredericton, who was consulted by the government, says it's the safest setup for the vehicle.

"We are confident based on all the expert advice that we've received that we have the right tires on the right vehicles that are safest for students," Kilfoil said.

Kilfoil added that School District 15, which includes Bathurst, has taken a leadership role in developing travel protocols and procedures that are being distributed throughout the province.

The women say a tire expert at Transport Canada agrees that the vehicle should have winter tires on the front and the back.

Use the school buses (of appropriate size) as they were designed with student safety in mind, plus you would also hopefully get a trained experienced driver for that vehicle..is a few dollars fuel/wages wear and tear worth a childs life?
