Budding northern web designer honoured for competition win

Maybe it's those long northern New Brunswick winters.
Born in Madran, a small community north of Bathurst, Jason Valdron began programming when he was just 10 years old. He soon learned to design websites, and realized that he had found his niche in the information technology field.
And his hard work has come to fruition.
On Wednesday, Education Minister Roland Haché presented Valdron with a banner on behalf of the non-profit technology group Skills Canada, to be hung in his former high school, L'Ecole Secondaire Negisiguit.
"Jason is an outstanding example of the talent we have here in New Brunswick among our students," Haché said.
Valdron was honoured for his gold medal win in the website development competition at the Skills Canada competition in 2008, and a silver medal as part of Team Canada earlier this fall in the international competition in Calgary, where more than 900 competitors took part in 45 skills competitions.
Valdron was not the only New Brunswicker who won a medal at the international competition.
Isabelle Collin of St. Léolin was awarded another of the record eight medals won by Team Canada at the international event, held from Sept. 2-5.
Luc Morin, executive director for Skills Canada in New Brunswick, says he's encouraged by the increase in skilled trades programs in the province.
"You can tell that the level (of education) that they are getting provincially, in terms of the trades, is second to none," Morin said of the two medal winners, Valdron and Collin.
But Morin said Valdron deserves much of the credit for his web-design skills.
"Although there are some courses offered in some schools, in Jason's case it's mostly self-taught," he said.
