E.coli sickens Wendy's patrons
Published Tuesday November 3rd, 2009

FREDERICTON - Customers were turned away from a Wendy's fast-food restaurant in Fredericton on Monday after it voluntarily locked its doors to disinfect after an E. coli outbreak.
Even the sidewalks leading to the restaurant were scrubbed after six patrons who ate at the Wendy's prior to Oct. 27 became ill.
Health Department spokeswoman Shannon Hagerman said the common denominator in the six cases is that the patrons ate salads made at the store.
Store franchisee Dan Moore said the loss of revenue was irrelevant when compared to assuring the public's safety.
"We voluntarily closed our store today to undertake a thorough and complete cleaning of our restaurant," he said. "We want to be 100 per cent certain that we are able to provide a safe product.
"We are not taking this lightly."
Dr. Cristin Muecke, regional medical officer of health, said anyone who ate at the restaurant before Oct. 27 should seek medical attention if they experience severe cramps, diarrhea, abdominal pain and vomiting.
"The restaurant has implemented control measures to help minimize any risks and has been fully inspected," the Health Department stated in a release.
The department said the restaurant was co-operating and officials saw no reason to order it closed.
