Accident

Motorcyclist hospitalized

One man was taken to hospital Monday around 4 p.m. after his motorcycle collided with a mini van on the Lepreau Village Road in Lepreau. The Musquash Fire Department responded to the call. The victim had already left the scene by ambulance when firefighters arrived. Firefighters assisted the RCMP with traffic control and clearing debris from the roadway.

Smoke

Nest in car causes fire

On Sunday, a driver noticed smoke coming from the dashboard of his truck as he drove along West Branch Road and called 911. When the Musquash Fire Department arrived, firefighters removed a plastic cover and found what appeared to be an animal's nest on fire near the truck's heater motor. The fire caused minor damage to the truck.

Traffic

Bridge work will reduce lanes

The provincial Department of Transportation was unable to complete paving work on the Reversing Falls Bridge last week due to poor weather. Traffic on the bridge will be reduced to one lane beginning Wednesday and it should last up to two days.

Internet

Company to redesign website

The city has awarded a $89,500 contract to Internet Solutions Ltd. to redesign its website. The Atlantic Canadian company was one of nine that responded to a request for proposals issued in August. The new website will include a virtual city hall, e-government transactions and access to a variety of information.

Streets

Crack sealing on McAllister Drive

Common council has approved a $48,000 contract for Road Savers Maritime Ltd. to seal cracks on McAllister Drive. The company had the lowest of three bids. The project costs $8,000 more than the city had budgeted. The company will seal 10 kilometres of pavement on McAllister from Rothesay Avenue to Loch Lomond Road.

Watershed

Land sold near Latimore Lake

A piece of city land outside watershed limits near Latimore Lake will be subdivided and sold to a private citizen, after common council approved the move Monday night. Robert Hoy will pay $10,000 plus tax for the four-hectare lot, an amount negotiated based on the expense of creating a driveway. The money will go to Saint John Water. The agreement follows the city's new policy to sell or exchange city land for the purpose of acquiring sensitive lands in the watershed.

Pavement

Company to fix fire station lot

Debly Enterprises Ltd. will reconstruct the parking lot of the Saint John Fire Department's station on Loch Lomond Road. The company's bid of about $54,700 was the lowest of three received by the city and came in slightly higher than the engineer's estimate of $53,000. The work will include removing existing pavement, excavating, grading, patching, and re-paving.

Snow

City blower to be fixed

Common council has approved spending $30,000 to fix a large snow blower attachment, rather than spending up to $120,000 to buy a new one. ITS Fleet Maintenance of Saint John had the lowest of three bids and will complete the work. According to a staff report, the 1988 Vohl blower attaches to the largest front-end loader in the fleet and is used to remove large volumes of snow in very short order. The blower broke at the end of last winter.
