Chaleur region studies recycling

BATHURST - The Nepisiguit Solid Waste Commission is waiting for results from a feasibility study into a centralized recycling program for Northern New Brunswick. Raymond Bryar, general manager of the commission, said the study is being done because the Chaleur region needs to expand from its current depot system. He said the study is looking into a possible curbside pick-up system with a central sorting location for the north. The study is expected to be completed in 2010. In the meantime, the Nepisiguit Solid Waste Commission will focus on the depot system which features 12 large blue bins throughout the Chaleur region as drop-off points for recyclables.

BATHURST - An actor who originally hails from Bathurst is currently rubbing shoulders with some big-name Hollywood talent while on location in Malta. Gary Levert is part of the cast for a miniseries based on Herman Melville's classic 1851 novel Moby Dick, a cast that includes William Hurt (The Big Chill), Oscar-nominated actor Ethan Hawke (Training Day), Donald Sutherland (MASH, Klute) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files). Filming started last month in Nova Scotia, before the cast and crew departed last weekend for Malta, located in the south of Europe on the Mediterranean coast.

Man finds new Magnetic Hill

BATHURST - A Beresford man believes northern New Brunswick has its own version of Magnetic Hill. Camille Arseneault said he discovered a spot near the Caribou Mountain Wind Farm featuring an optical illusion similar to Magnetic Hill near Moncton. The mechanic said he took his wife's parents to the spot last month and they, too, were amazed by what they saw. Magnetic Hill has become a tourist attraction because when a car is placed in neutral, it will begin to roll backwards, apparently uphill.
