Seniors project officially opened

SAINT-LÉONARD - A new, 10-unit affordable housing project for seniors was officially opened in Saint-Léonard on Friday. The $1-million project received $200,000 in federal funding to offset construction costs, as well as $439,000 in rent supplements from the province as part of the Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Agreement. Located beside the Foyer Notre Dame de St-Léonard Inc., the facility includes eight one-bedroom units, and two two-bedroom units. Two units are accessible for persons with disabilities.

Region urged to offer more activities

EDMUNDSTON - A tourism consultant contends the Madawaska region needs to offer more activities to lure vacationers to the region. Roger Brooks, an Indiana native, gave a presentation in Edmundston last week. He said the region needs to develop a broader selection of activities and events to keep tourists entertained throughout their visit.

Youth shelter gets assistance

SAINT-ANDRÉ - The provincial and federal governments are joining together to provide financial assistance for the expansion and renovation of a youth shelter in Saint-André. The project received $157,654 from the federal and provincial governments to assist with repairs to the existing facility, and the addition of two apartments and three extra rooms. Social Development Minister Kelly Lamrock and Tobique-Mactaquac MP Mike Allen, officially opened the new addition of Centre Jeunesse Oasis Youth Centre Friday.

RCMP investigate telephone frauds

GRAND-FALLS - The RCMP is investigating two cases of telephone fraud in the northwest of the province. An unknown man from Ontario phoned an elderly person in the Plaster Rock area on Aug. 14. The suspect identified himself as the grandson of the victim. He indicated he had been arrested by the police in Ontario and needed a substantial amount of money to be able to return home. The victim went to a post office and electronically transferred the amount requested. The same type of incident occurred the day before in the Grand Falls area. The suspect had also identified himself as the grandson of the victim and used the same strategy to get a substantial amount of money from the victim. RCMP is asking for anyone who is a victim of fraud or a fraud attempt to contact their local police.

Genealogical history released

CARAQUET - A Caraquet writer has published a genealogical history that traces his family's roots back to the early 18th century. Fidèle Thériault's explores the lives of Joseph Thériault and his wife Marie-Joseph Girouard, who founded Bertrand in 1787, and their descendants. The book is called Les Thériault.

Crime

Drug unit busts pot grow-op

EDMUNDSTON - Members of the Bathurst and Edmundston Regional Drug Unit has seized more than 1,000 mature marihuana plants on Crown land in the Edmundston area. A water pump, hoses, fertilizer, peat moss and other marijuana cultivation tools were also seized. Cpl. Alain Lang said it was a well-established growing operation with an organized irrigation system and observation posts. He said in addition to the harm illegal drug trafficking causes to communities, pesticides and water runoff from such an operation have the potential to cause substantial environmental damage.

Announcement

Senior care report released today

BATHURST - Brian Kenny, the Minister of State for Seniors, will this morning release a report on long-term care for seniors in New Brunswick. The announcement will take place in Bathurst, and Kenny will be joined by Bathurst Mayor Stephen Brunet, and senior goodwill ambassadors Florence Roussy and Paul Dubé.
