Funds released for 225th anniversary

Tired of waiting for Ottawa to get on board, common council has agreed to release $150,000 in funds to the Saint John Community Arts Board, which is putting on Saint John's 225th anniversary celebrations next year. City took the stop at its meeting Monday night. The city had originally made the funding contingent on Ottawa's chipping in an additional $750,000, but board officials said time was running out to get everything ready.

Death

Police withhold man's identity

City police still haven't confirmed the identity of a man found Saturday behind Wal-Mart in a swampy area near Majors Brook. Police have ruled out foul play in the man's death, but are withholding the man's name until his identity is confirmed and all family members have been notified. The body was found Saturday at 10:30 a.m. by members of the River Valley Ground Search and Rescue during a training exercise.

Recreation

Y will stay in Millidgeville

The city will extend the YMCA-YWCA's contract for use of the Millidgeville Community Centre until the end of this year. There had been some question whether the contract would be renewed because School District 8 wanted the facility for additional classroom space at M. Gerald Teed School. However, recent changes mean that more students will now attend Millidgeville North School, freeing up space at M. Gerald Teed. The city has also agreed to provide a grant to the Y of more than $18,000 for cleaning, heating and lights.

Accident

Collision sends two to hospital

The drivers of a car and motorcycle were taken to hospital after their vehicles collided at a west side intersection Monday afternoon. The crash at the intersection of Fundy Drive and Argyle Street occurred shortly after 5 p.m. The motorcyclist appeared to have sustained a broken leg and had many cuts on his body. The driver of the car was in shock. Police and fire crews remained on scene for approximately 30 minutes.

Flees

Owner turns away robber

An armed robber burst into the Martello Convenience store at 403 Dufferin Row Sunday at 9:30 p.m., but he left empty-handed. Police said that when the robber demanded cash, the store's owner/operator refused to hand any over. The robber than left the store. Police wouldn't divulge what type of weapon the robber was brandishing but described the man as six feet tall, chubby and wearing a blue winter jacket with the hood up and blue winter gloves.

Roads

City investing in chip-sealing

The city is expected to spend about $144,750 on chip-sealing, a simple form of asphalt, for four roads. The work will involve chip-sealing either all or portions of Cottage Road, Gerry Drive, Goldsworthy Road and Norris Road. At its meeting Monday night, common council selected Northern Construction Ltd. of Grand Falls to carry out the work.

Smoke

Inside burnout brings firefighters

At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the Saint John Fire Department received a report of smoke coming from an automotive repair shop at 70 Rothesay Ave. A fire department official said when firefighters arrived, they found smoke but it wasn't because of a fire. A mechanic in the shop had decided to do a burnout with his car - spinning the vehicle's wheels - inside the garage.

Regarding 'Inside burnout brings firefighters' bringing out the fire dept. Perhaps idiotic actions such as this should result in a request for reimbursement to the FD, thus lowering the costs of fire protection for the rest of the city.

It would be nice to know which automotive repair shop at 70 Rothesay Ave has staff like that. I would hate to bring my car there for work. Perhaps the actions of the staff involved are a reflection of the way the business is operated.

I'm also hoping it was indeed the car of one of the staff and not that of a customers.
