Robbery

Knife used to steal

Police are investigating an armed robbery of Little John's Variety on the east side on Friday night shortly after 10 p.m. Officers say a man dressed in dark clothes wearing a hoodie and a bandana covering his face entered the store, brandished a knife and left with an undisclosed amount of cash. There were no injuries. Little John's Variety is located on John T. McMillan Avenue.

Arrest

Robbery suspect nabbed in Moncton

A Saint John man has been arrested in Moncton in connection with the robbery of a man who was waiting for a bus near McAllister Place on Thursday morning. The suspect, in his early 20s, was arrested on Friday night, city police said, and will appear in court on Monday to face charges. The victim was robbed at knife point by a man and woman, city police have said, and the pair made off with the man's cellphone and some personal items.

Crash

One person hospitalized

One person was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries on Saturday afternoon after a two-vehicle collision in the vicinity of 715 Rothesay Ave. A police spokesman said both vehicles involved were "significantly" damaged. The crash is under investigation.

Accident

Motorcyclist breaks collarbone

A 21-year-old Rothesay man is in hospital with a broken collarbone after crashing his motorcycle in a ditch early Sunday morning. Rothesay Regional Police say they got a call that a bike was turned over in a ditch on Sandra Drive in Quispamsis. Police say alcohol was involved in the crash and the accident is under investigation. The crash happened at 1:45 a.m.

Fire

Blaze causes damage to kitchen

A kitchen at 39 Marilyn Dr. on the east side sustained minor fire damage on Saturday night. Fire district chief Joe Armstrong said firefighters arrived at 7:21 p.m. and spent an hour and 15 minutes ventilating the building. Damage to the cupboards and counter tops was sustained during the blaze. No one was hurt.

Muggings

Three people assaulted

Two men in their 20s arrived at the Saint John City Police headquarters early Sunday morning to report they had been assaulted and robbed in the uptown area. The victims were taken to the hospital, police said. The two men were robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash, he said. The incident, which happened about 3 a.m., remains under investigation and follows one on Friday evening about 8 o'clock, when a senior citizen was assaulted with his own cane on Princess Street. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The suspect in that incident will appear in court at the end of August.

Flooding

Council to select storm study contract

A private consultant may conduct a study of a potential storm water system and related drainage improvements to the Milford drainage basin located near Milford Road and Riverhill Drive. City staff recommends that common council should hire the Terrain Group, a company with offices in Saint John, to carry out the work for about $170,600. Council will vote on the matter tonight.
