Pick of the week: Salty Jam Music Festival takes place Thursday through Saturday at various venues along the waterfront in Saint John. The lineup includes Plants and Animals, House of David Gang, Tokyo Police Club, Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees and Andres Godoy. Early Bird Jam Pass is $39.50 (only 100 available). * Today: Hampton Communities in Bloom Garden Tour features six gardens in the Hampton region from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets, $12 each, are available at Hampton Pharmasave and Kredls' Corner Market. Chris and Debbie Black and Ingrid Mueller continue The Emerging Artists Series at the Blue Door Restaurant with an exhibition of new works by Adam Jeffrey. Fredericton Arts Alliance Artists in Residence 2009 Summer Series presents Jesse Fergusson and Chris Harding in the Soldiers' Barracks Casemates on the corner of Carleton and Queen in downtown Fredericton today until July 10.

The Martello Music Series presents the Saint John String Quartet at 7:30 p.m. at Carleton Martello Tower National Historic Site, 454 Whipple St. Tickets are $20 for adults with special rates for seniors and youth. For more information call 636-4011.

Fredericton hosts a Visual Arts Festival and Art Market in celebration of its 2009 Cultural Capital of Canada designation today and Sunday. Browse and purchase art by more than 30 New Brunswick artists under the tent in Officers' Square. Other festival events include children's art activities and demonstrations by artist Gerald Beaulieu, who will be embellishing a salmon sculpture.

* Sunday: Fredericton Society of Artists present an afternoon Open House every Sunday afternoon throughout the summer. Members of the Fredericton Society of Artists will paint under the edVentures tent in Barracks Square from noon to 5 p.m. All are invited to chat with artists and watch them work.

* Monday: The St. Andrews Film Society presents 'Outsourced' at the W. C. O'Neill Arena Theatre at 7:30 p.m. In this award-winning comedy produced in the U.S. and India, Todd Anderson (Josh Hamilton) spends his days managing a customer call centre in Seattle for a novelty products company until his job is 'outsourced' to India. Adding insult to injury, Todd is ordered to travel to India to train his replacement. All are welcome and admission is free, although a donation of $3 for members ($4 for non-members) is suggested. The Early Music Studio of Saint John presents the first concert in its Monday Music Series of music played on period instruments in historic Stone Church, 78 Carleton St., from 12:15 to 12:50 p.m. Tim Blackmore (recorder) and Richard Kidd (harpsichord) perform a program of works by Handel, Boismortier, Telemann and Marcello. * Tuesday: The Shakespeare Society of Saint John presents the talk 'The Windows of Men's Souls: Religion in Shakespeare's England' by historian Dr. Cheryl Fury from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Shakespeare Space (3rd floor of Brunswick Square, Aliant building). The Songwriters Association of Canada Moncton Songstage, Moncton's open mic night for original music by singer-songwriters, takes place from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. at St. James' Gate, 14 Church St. Registered artists include S.A.C. member Robin Anne Ettles, Lisa LeBlanc, Julien Simon, Rob Comeau, Ashley Bernard and André Saulnier. Each performer showcases three to five songs. Songwriters are also welcome to register for August 4. J.D. Irving, Limited presents the talk 'Wolastoq Statues Speak' at Wolastoq Park, Lancaster Avenue, overlooking Reversing Falls, in Saint John. Albert Deveau's statues of famed men and women and characters of New Brunswick will be the topic of discussion. Host David Goss shares the story behind their lives on this short walk at one of the city's most scenic spots. For more information call 672-8601.

* Wednesday: Soprano Jessica McCormack and trumpeter Edward Phillips perform at the Sounds of Summer Noon Concert series at the historic Church of St. Andrew and St. David, 164 Germain St., in Saint John, from 12:15 - 12:50 p.m. No admission charge but freewill contributions help ensure the continuing success of the series. Everyone welcome.

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick hosts a guided frog walk through Fredericton's Hyla Park Nature Preserve at 10 a.m. Join a guide on a walk through Canada's premier amphibian sanctuary, home to seven species of frogs. The Oromocto 2009 Summer Concert Series takes place each Wednesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. throughout July and August at Sir Douglas Hazen Park, in Oromocto. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the Hazen Park Centre. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the free concerts rain or shine. Today's concert features Eric LeBlanc and friends. LeBlanc offers a mix of Maritime, folk and blues.

Joan Meade presents a talk 'Heroes & Heroines' at 3 p.m. at Barracks Square in Fredericton as part of the city's Storyteller Series. Rain venue is Fredericton Public Library.

* Thursday: The Beaverbrook Art Gallery presents Thursday Night Art sessions for adults from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free for members and $15 for non-members. Register by calling 458-2028.

Gallery Connexion, in partnership with Fredericton Arts and Learning, welcomes José Luis Torres, Gallery Connexion's artist-in-residence for the summer of 2009. Torres will work outdoors from July 8 to 15 on a permanent sculpture to be part of the newly developing Culture Garden behind the Charlotte Street Art Centre at 732 Charlotte St. in Fredericton. All are invited to welcome this Torres at a barbecue today from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Culture Garden. Gallery 78, 796 Queen St., Fredericton, celebrates the art and beauty of the region by showcasing the group exhibition Field of Vision,' opening today. Réjean Roy's cool, refreshing lakes and dense woods jump from the page in vibrant hues of green and blue. Dawn McCracken's new work, 'Bushes in the Riverbank,' exudes the feeling of a quiet summer evening at the cottage. And Ann Manuel's 'Pond Nymph' evokes the pleasures of wandering through the garden on a late summer afternoon. Exhibition continues until Aug. 2.

* Saturday, July 11: The Fredericton Botanic Garden Association presents its 11th annual Treasured Garden Tour, featuring four outdoor spaces, one of which is featured in the recent June issue of Canadian Gardening magazine. The tour is followed by a garden party at the Fredericton Botanic Garden. Tickets, $15, are available at Westminster Books, Scott's Nursery, Trites Flower Shop, Botinicals Gift Shop, Main Street Floral Gallery and Green Village Garden Centre. The Garden Tour runs from 1 to 3 p.m. and the garden party from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Hospice of Charlotte hosts its annual Artists-by-the-Sea fundraiser in St. Andrews. Enjoy more than 20 artists painting in and around the picturesque coastal town. The small works created on site will be sold through silent auction at the Legion Hall on the corner of Queen and Prince of Wales Streets. In addition, artists participating in this event have framed works on display, and for sale, at Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre. The New Brunswick Crafts Council presents the Rothesay Fine Crafts Festival today and Sunday, July 12, at the Rothesy Common.

* Ongoing: The Beaverbrook Art Gallery presents 'Léopold L. Foulem: Récupération,' an exhibition of contemporary ceramics by Canadian artist Lèopold L. Foulem. This extensive exhibition of Foluem's work was organized and circulated by Saint Mary's University Art Gallery, Halifax. The exhibition explores the history and tradition of ceramics in a manner that fluctuates between the duality of masculinity and femininity. His use of decals and found materials, alongside a virtuoso technique, bridges the space between popular culture and high art in a single leap.

The New Brunswick Crafts Council presents Flow/Fleuve; New Brunswick Crafts Council members respond to their provincial capital at Government House in Fredericton. This exhibition is a response to the architecture, environment, heritage, institutions, values and people of the capital city.

Emerging Artists Exhibition is showing at Trinity Galleries, 128 Germain St., in Saint John. The group show features graduates from NSCAD and Mount Allison University Suzanne Babineau, Caroline Buttery, TJ Chisholm, Erin Hamilton, Mia Kaur, Aaron MacLean, Aaron Milrad, Erin O'Neill and Ginevra Syperek. Renowned sculptor Robin Peck, aboriginal artist Alan Syliboy and wood turner Andrew Ross have joined the Ingrid Mueller Art Concepts gallery. A display of their works can be viewed at the gallery, 117 York St., Tuesday to Saturday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. The Estate of Philip Iverson will be on exhibition until July 15.
