Condolence book deadline extended

FREDERICTON - Dates for members of the public to sign the book of condolence for the family of former governor general Roméo LeBlanc have been extended to July 2. The book may be signed in the public entrance at the east end of Government House, 51 Woodstock Road, Fredericton. A state funeral for LeBlanc will be held on Friday in Memramcook.

Politician's son dies from injuries

FREDERICTON - The 21-year-old son of Nova Scotia cabinet minister Ramona Jennex has died. Fraser Williams was involved in a car crash more than a week ago in Minto and died from his injuries on Sunday. Jennex is minister of municipal relations. Deputy premier Frank Corbett is taking over her duties on a temporary basis.

Car's plunge into river probed

JACQUET RIVER - All four occupants of a car were rescued after it left Highway 11 between the Jacquet River and Nash Creek exits on Sunday, struck a guard rail and plummeted into the river 30 metres below. The two men and two women suffered various injuries and hypothermia. Paramedics, volunteer firefighters, RCMP and several bystanders assisted in the rescue. A woman is in intensive care in a Moncton hospital. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Lifeguards assist boy, two girls

DALHOUSIE - A lifeguard assisted a boy and two girls caught in the current when swimming off a park in Dalhousie. A lifeguard from a nearby pool jumped in to help as the three struggled against a rising tide. The swimmers eventually made it back to shore. The boy and two girls were examined by paramedics but were not injured. Police are reminding people to exercise caution and always be aware of local high tide times.

N.B. team tops Acadian Games

PETIT-ROCHER - Southeast New Brunswick claimed first place at the 30th annual Acadian Games held over the weekend in Petit-Rocher. The team beat out squads from eight other regions across the Maritimes in the competition, which included badminton, basketball, soccer and softball. About 1,100 volunteers helped make the event a success, organizers said.

NDP leader takes nomination

TRACADIE-SHEILA - New Brunswick NDP leader Roger Duguay has secured his party's nomination for the riding of Tracadie-Sheila. A former Catholic priest, Duguay ran in the 2006 provincial election, placing third in the riding of Miramichi Bay-Neguac. The riding is currently represented by Progressive Conservative MLA, Claude Landry. The NDP has been without a seat in the provincial legislature since former leader Elizabeth Weir resigned in 2004. Duguay is hoping to capitalize on momentum drawn from his Nova Scotia counterpart's election victory earlier this month.

Mobile home blaze under investigation

MONCTON - A mobile home fire in Moncton is under investigation. The blaze on Marsh Street left several people homeless, but there were no injuries. The family dog died in the fire. The home's residents - a couple in their 40s and their 19-year-old daughter - are staying with relatives.

Health minister ready for new post

FREDERICTON - New Brunswick's new health minister says she's ready to shoulder more political responsibility. Mary Schryer says some of the issues she dealt with as minister of social development will tie into her new responsibilities. She also says she would like to work on a chronic disease strategy and a comprehensive catastrophic drug plan. Political scientist Tom Bateman says Schryer will have to work hard to extinguish a number of political fires left by former health minister Mike Murphy.
