TORONTO - Brian Barnett of Edmonton won the 200 metres at the Canadian track and field championships Sunday, his second victory in as many days.

Barnett captured the 100-metre title Saturday, making him the first male to win both sprints since Nicholas Macrozonaris in 2003.

Barnett won in 20.71 seconds on the wet track at Varsity Stadium, edging Jared Connaughton of Charlottetown, who finished in 20.78. Sam Effah of Calgary was third in 21.02.

Adrienne Power of Halifax won the women's 200 title in 23.22 seconds.

Nathan Brannen of Cambridge, Ont., won the men's 1,500 metres, sitting in third place through most of the race before taking the lead with 150 metres to go. Veteran middle distance runner Kevin Sullivan of Brantford, Ont., was sidelined for the Canadian championships - which also serve as the qualifying meet for next month's world championships in Berlin - with an Achilles injury.

Malindi Elmore of Calgary won the women's 1,500 in 4:15.04.

Jillian Drouin of Sarnia, Ont., won the women's high jump, clearing 1.80 metres under a steady drizzle that hampered the early events. She beat veteran Nicole Forrester of Toronto, who took the silver with 1.80 metres.

Tabia Charles of Pickering, Ont., won the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.89 metres, despite running through the pit on two attempts and passing on another over fears of the slippery runup.

Julie Labonte of Ste-Justine, Que., won the women's shot put with a throw of 14.96 metres, while Jason Tunks of London, Ont., won the men's discus with a throw of 546.14 metres.

Trent Ratzlaff of Calgary captured the men's 400-metre hurdles title in 51.98 seconds. The field was missing Canadian record-holder Adam Kunkel of Paisley, Ont., who pulled out with an Achilles injury.

Christine Lowe of Port Moody, B.C., won the women's 400 hurdles in 1:00.77.

Rob Watson of Guelph, Ont., won the men's 3,000-metre steeplechase in 8:32.87, and will be considered for the world championship team under the "rising star" category.

Meredith Macgregor of Surrey, B.C., won the women's steeplechase in 10:28.12.

Only four athletes met the qualifying marks over the four-day event that they needed for the world championships - 100-metre hurdlers Perdita Felicien and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, Sultana Frizzell in the women's hammer throw, and shot putter Dylan Armstrong.

Athletes have until July 24 to reach their qualifying marks, and Athletics Canada was hoping to send a team of about 30 athletes to the meet.
