Pick of the week: The Fredericton Visual Arts Festival begins today and continues until July 5. Festival events include children's art activities with 'Bubbajane' (Beverlee Jane-Stewart of Wee Can Too), children's entertainment with ECMA-nominated Scotty and the Stars and art demonstrations by P.E.I. artist Gerald Beaulieu, who will decorate a salmon sculpture. Browse unique art by more than 30 New Brunswick artists under the tent in Officers' Square at the Art Market from Thursday until Sunday. On Sunday, there will be a 'Spin Off' fibre arts demonstration. All events and activities take place in Officers' Square, on The Green and in the Historic Garrison District. * Today: Wai Chung (Rachel) Kwan, pianist and singer, performs 'Be-Loved,' the final concert of her 'Love to Share' series at the Saint John Arts Centre, at 7 p.m. Kwan shares stories from her personal journey of love through a lively and heart-warming mix of 12 songs and their arrangements. Refreshments will be served. Tickets, $15/adult, $10/student, may be purchased at the Saint John Arts Centre. Call 633-4870 for more information.
Artists and organizations are invited to become part of the Canada Day Parade by participating in a Design Your Sign session today from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., or Tuesday, 5 to 10 p.m. at the UNB Art Centre, Memorial Hall on the UNB campus. Supplies are provided through the assistance of Downtown Fredericton, the City of Fredericton and the Arts Development Branch of the New Brunswick Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport. The Multicultural Association of Fredericton Inc. (MCAF) and local ethno-cultural groups host the first annual Cultural Expressions Festival 09 today and Sunday at Officers' Square, highlighting the contributions of Fredericton's ethno-cultural communities through diverse arts, dance and music. The festival features more than 60 cultural performances, displays and crafts, activities for families, workshops and multicultural films and slide shows. Free admission. In celebration of Fredericton's 2009 Cultural Capitals of Canada designation, a New Brunswick Emerging Artist Exhibition will be on display at Government House, in the lower level gallery, from June 27 - Aug. 14. It features photography, acrylic, mixed media, textiles and more by 16 emerging artists.
* Sunday: Award-winning photographer Noel Chenier offers the photography excursion 'A Day at Kings Landing Historical Settlement' from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants visit the various attractions at the site, including the many historic homes with beautiful gardens, farms, plants and animals and the famous water wheel. Chenier guides participants on various approaches to photographing at each location. Cost is $75, which includes admission. Bring payment with you that day. * Monday: All are invited to a symposium exploring Visual Arts Practice and Patronage in Atlantic Canada at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. There is no charge for admission and the event will begin with a reception at 7 p.m. followed by panel discussions. The four featured panellists for the evening are: Anne Bertrand, chair of the NB Foundation for the Arts; Peter Powning, artist and Saidye Bronfman Award winner; Ron Shuebrook, artist and former arts administrator; and David McKay, artist and member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art. The panel will be moderated by Michael Maynard, principal of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and chair of the 2009 Fredericton Visual Arts Festival.
* Tuesday: Viravong, a comic book illustrator from Paris, France, presents a public lecture on the four major streams of the comic book: the French/Belgian, American, Japanese and South American at 7 p.m. at the Centre for Arts and Technology, 130 Carleton St., Fredericton. Free; all welcome.
The Capitol Theatre in Moncton presents an opening of the art exhibit 'Patterns in Light' by artist Jackie Gale-Vaillancourt in the Capitol Theatre Irving Lobby at 5 p.m. Gale-Vaillancourt was born in Placentia, on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. Her interest in representational art contributes to a style that tends toward realism. The subject matter is eclectic, ranging from flora to children at play to still-life and landscape. The exhibition continues until Aug. 28. Entrance is free of charge.
* Wednesday: A Musical Legacy: A Celebration of Fredericton Composers features the work of Fredericton-area composers over time, including local modern composers, in a series of performances featuring Atlantic Sinfonia, and accompanied by a hand-picked Fredericton choir specially formed for the series. The project is part of the Cultural Capitals of Canada initiative. The first concert is today at 7 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral. Concerts in September and November will follow. Halifax-based rock recording artist Jon Mullane performs at 5 p.m. on the Saint John Boardwalk as part of Canada Day celebrations. Mullane's single 'Make You Move' was nominated for Single of the Year at the 2009 East Coast Music Awards.
Jeff Morris plays the pedway stage in Fredericton at 8 p.m. as part of the city's Canada Day festivities. An award-winning songwriter, he has shared the stage with Bryan Adams, Steve Earle, Blue Oyster Cult and Tom Cochrane.
* Thursday: Bean Books, 122 Germain St., hosts a book lovers' club from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Everyone welcome; no registration required. For more information call 672 BEAN (2326).
The opening of Buy the Best takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. at the New Brunswick Crafts Council Gallery, located in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre in Fredericton. From July 2 to Sept. 18, the gallery hosts an exhibition featuring works by leading craftspeople of New Brunswick. New items will be on display weekly. The opening coincides with the Downtown Fredericton Culture Crawl. For more information, call 450-8989.
Inprint Bookstore, 16 King St., Saint John, marks its second anniversary with a celebration of words and music. All items will be 20 per cent off all day. Festivities culminate in a reading at 4:30 p.m. by award-winning author Paul Quarrington ('King Leary,' 'The Ravine' and 'Whale Music'), with musical accompaniment provided by bandmates Martin Worthy and Rebecca Campbell of Pork Belly Futures. * Friday: Backstreet Records presents For the Sake of the Song at 124 Germain St., Saint John, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Three to five singer-songwriters are featured each week. Music lovers of all ages welcome.
Music at the Cathedral Recital Series features Jonathan Bayley, Yvonne Kershaw, Terry Selfton and Willis Noble at 12:10 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton. Freewill offering.
* Saturday, July 4: The Beaverbrook Art Gallery presents a docent-led Art Lover's Tour at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Regular admission fees apply.
* Ongoing: 'Building A Permanent Collection: A Selection from TIMA,' is showing at the Tides Institute and Museum of Art, 43 Water St., Eastport, Maine. The exhibition runs through July 26.
Third Space Gallery in Saint John presents 'The Tongue is the Rudder of Our Ship,' a collaborative video installation by artists Sym Corrigan and Leah Modigliani. Through the use of Maritime semaphore flag signals, Corrigan (Halifax) and Modigliani (New York) produce a rich visual display of information that yet fails to communicate as a satisfying conversation. On display at the Third Space Gallery window, 40 Charlotte St., until Aug. 7.
