If you are looking for variety the next week has plenty of it. First is the longest race on the calendar with the Cst. Bruce Hadley Relay for Heart covering over 275 kilometers. This event has relay teams travelling from Fredericton or Edmundston to merge together in Bathurst the next day. The relay honours Hadley, who died too early from heart disease. You can get all the details at http://www.events.runningroom.com/site/?raceId=4214. If you are looking for something just a little bit shorter, the Dairy Queen 10-km goes Saturday in Campbellton. This is a scenic and fast course with 5-km and 2.5-km options to appeal to the whole family. Check it out at www.anb.ca.

Next week in southern New Brunswick, the Canada Day 10-Miler in Grand Bay-Westfield is quickly becoming a running tradition. This is a great event with 10-km and 5-km options also available and lots of nice little touches including an incentive to register on-line. Be sure to register in advance at http://www.atlanticchip.ca/.

GREAT WEEK: On Father's Day, we had two great runs. Let's start in St. Andrews with the 29th running of the Father's Day 5-Miler. This is always a fast event and this year was no different as three speedsters fought it out for top spot. In first place from Island View was David Edward-Brown of Island View won it in 29:17 ahead of Bloomfield's John Herron, who narrowly edged out Todd Power of Salisbury (29:40 to 29:47). The women also had a close finish for second after top spot went to hometown girl Lydia Frost in 35:39. Second was taken by Jolicure's Nancy Burkhart in 36:02 while third position went to Angela Ewings of Littleton Maine in 36:16. The kids 2-km went to Adam Tanner of St Andrew's in 10:16 and the 1=km went to Patricia Carter of Bayside in 4:16.

In Saint John, it was another fast and furious Do It for Dad as three runners went under 16:30 for the 5-km event. Alex Coffin of Saint John won the race in 16:10, 15 seconds ahead of Chris Brake of Saint John in 16:25, who showed a recent break from running did him nothing but good. Dean Strowbridge was right on Brake's heels in the closest weekend finish with a 16:28 clocking.

For the women, in what is becoming a habit, it was Brenda Guitard of Saint John in 20:21 for top spot. Second spot went to Kristine Beaulieu of Saint John in 22:27 and third spot to Heather Chandler of Rothesay in 24:35.

TOP PERFORMER: This week's Person on the Run goes out to Dr. Tom Whelan of Saint John. Not only does he treat prostate cancer, he rolls up his sleeves to make Do It for Dad work every year for the last nine years. He is the heart and soul behind the event, doing whatever it takes to get the message out that an active lifestyle is an important part of staying healthy. He also models that behaviour as he often bikes to work. His support crew of co-workers, family and friends is amazing with three generations of Whelans in attendance at every race from the beginning. Well done Dr Tom!

Gotta run.....
