North end
Contract awarded for Victoria Square

As part of its pledge to renew the north end, common council agreed to spend just over $330,000 for work on Victoria Square Monday night. Maguire Excavating Ltd. won the contract for construction work on redesign enhancements, curb and sidewalks and a renovation of the entire square. The Glenn Group Ltd. was awarded the contract for construction management services for the square in the amount of $30,479.

Contract

Robertson Square to get facelift

The city will spend $309,000 on improvements to Robertson Square in the north end. Common council awarded the contract to ICR General Contractors Ltd. Monday night. There were two bids. The contractors will renovate the square, including curb and sidewalk enhancements. The Glenn Group Ltd. was also awarded the contract for construction management services at a cost of $31,329.

Energy

West side arena to get upgrades

The city has decided to replace light fixtures, install sensors and put in a new heat recovery system to reduce energy consumption at the Peter Murray Arena on Dever Road on the west side. The lighting upgrades will save $4,500 in operating costs every year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 tonnes. SES Lighting and Energy Consultants of Bedford, N.S., submitted the lowest of four bids and was awarded the contract for just over $43,000. The new flood water heat and recovery system should also help reduce operating costs. Master Mechanical Contractors of Saint John submitted the lowest bid at just under $94,000 and will do the work.

Sewage

City acquires land for cleanup

A landowner in Red Head has agreed to sell a piece of his property to help with harbour cleanup. The city will pay Robert Arseneau $2,021, or 125 per cent of the land's appraised value, so it can build a sewer lift station along Red Head Road, just a small part of the big multi-year plan to rid the harbour and surrounding waterways of raw sewage. The municipality is still in negotiation to acquire a piece of neighbouring property, which will be expropriated if the owner doesn't settle. So far the city has successfully come to terms with owners of eight pieces of property needed for the cleanup.

Equipment

New air masks for firefighters

Saint John firefighters will get 10 new air masks, after common council awarded a contract for just over $44,000 Monday. Each mask - called a self-contained breathing apparatus - comes with a face piece and replacement carbon fibre cylinders. The contract won by MicMac Fire & Safety Ltd., which submitted the lowest of five bids received by city staff.

The renovations to Victoria Square will include repairing the retaining wall that runs along the Alexander Apts. The kids from Centennial and Lorne School have done a tile project that is going to be installed along that wall. 1200 tiles have been painted by the kids.

Some of the renovations to Victoria Square will include new benches, a gazebo, improved lighting, a sign, repair work to the steps leading to Victoria Street, garbage cans, tables, trees and an electrical unit to allow us to plug in our community Christmas tree.

Robertson Square is going to have the water problem resolved, repair the fence surrounding, improve the nasty playground, new benches, flowers, trees, improved lighting, as well as other improvements.

And...yes the people of the Old North End deserve these amendities.

North end does deserve it Tammy, but 330,000 grand?? and for what? Come on. This money could be better spent elsewhere in the community.

Ella H. the Village area could get things done but first they must get the community involved. The Old North End is driven by the community, when the community takes action, things will happen. But first it has to come from within, that is where real change occurs.

I would gladly offer any assistance to the Village group anytime.
