Police chief's tie judged ugliest

Saint John Police Chief Bill Reid won the ugliest tie contest on Saturday. Organized by uptown jeweler W. Smith & Co., the contest asked men to submit their ugliest ties and called for votes for the ugliest one. W. Smith & Co. employees drew two winners from a box on Saturday afternoon, one for a tie owner and another for a voter. Reid was the winning tie owner and Chris Morris was the winning voter. They will each get a $750 gents diamond ring. Proceeds from the contest will support prostate cancer care.

Rescue

Disabled sailboat towed to shore

The Coast Guard rescued a sailboat that was believed to be in distress on Sunday afternoon. The Saint John Fire Department received a report at about 1 p.m. that a sailboat on the St. John River near the end of Ragged Point Road was in distress, said District Chief Eric Garland of the fire department. Fire officials notified the Coast Guard, which sent a small water craft to the sailboat's aid. The Coast Guard found the sailboat had lost power and towed the boat to shore.

Vandalism

Graffiti sprayed on three buses

Three Acadian Lines buses were vandalized with graffiti on Friday night. Sgt. Joe Ferrar of the Saint John Police Force said the vandalism was reported on Saturday morning.

Crime

Apartment building fire investigated

The Saint John Fire Department and the Saint John Police Force's major crimes unit is investigating a fire that ignited at a three-storey apartment building on 40 Millidge Ave on Friday night, said District Fire Chief Eric Garland. When crews arrived on the scene, smoke was billowing from the building's second floor and people told officials the owner was still in the building, Garland said. Fire officials rescued the owner and carried out a search of the second floor, extinguished the fire and found that it had been started in a bedroom.

Is it just me or does anyone else find this statement a little strange? .... "The Coast Guard found the sailboat had lost power and towed the boat to shore."

Ummmm, its a SAILBOAT! not a powerboat.
