Gallery 78 in Fredericton opens the Francis Wishart exhibition ‘Some Trees’ Friday.

Pick of the week: The Beaverbrook Art Gallery hosts its annual family celebration, Lord Beaverbrook Day, with free admission all day today. Activities include: kids' art and play activities from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; cake and barbecue at 11 a.m.; docent-led exhibition tours at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.; performance by Fredericton City Band at noon; meet the artist Susan Vida Judah in the McCain Gallery at 2 p.m.; and presentation of three new portraits of Lord Beaverbrook by artists Charles Pachter, Viktor Mitic and John Boyle (all of whom will be in attendance). The first annual 'Raise the Roof' concert takes place at St. John the Baptist Church, 54 Broad St., Saint John. Reception and silent auction follows. All proceeds go to the St. John the Baptist building fund.

Hooper Studios Gallery, 177 Kennebecasis River Rd., in Hampton, presents its spring show with works by Tom Smith, Robert Merritt, Deborah Payne, Peter Thomas, Karen Shackleton, George Fry, Darren Byers, Kathy and Sue Hooper and Sophia Bella from noon to 4 p.m. The studio also offers Family Art from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Single $12, parent and child $20, family of four $30 (pre-registration required). * Sunday: The St. Andrews Film Society presents 'Manufactured Landscapes' at the W. C. O'Neill Arena at 7:30 p.m. A breathtaking tour de force from award-winning director Jennifer Baichwal, the film leads viewers to meditate on humanity's insatiable pursuit of progress and the implications of this obsession for the future (if any) of our species. 'Manufactured Landscapes' won a Genie for Best Documentary in 2007. All are welcome and admission is free, although a donation of $3 for members ($4 for non-members) is suggested. The City of Saint John hosts a heritage walking tour of Old North End in Saint John from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at St. Peter's gate on Clarendon Street. Rain date is Monday at 7 p.m. A community meeting follows at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 369 Main St., on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

* Monday: Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 36 Gondola Point Rd., Quispamsis, hosts Sing for the Q-Plex featuring the School District 6 Elementary Honour and the Rothesay-Kings Rotary Girls choirs beginning at 7 p.m. Proceeds go toward the church building fund and the Q-Plex.

Tim Issac presents an estate auction at the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre, 1 Market Square. Viewing begins at 3 p.m. and auction follows at 5 p.m. It features contents from the Hills Collections in Oxford, *.S.; a Sussex residence; two Rothesay estates and a Grand Bay estate as well as a Kennebecasis Park residence. Building on the success of Performing Arts NB's Children and the Arts roundtable discussion in Fredericton, PANB presents Children and the Arts II at Saint John Arts Centre, 20 Hazen Ave., beginning at 6:30 p.m. A panel of five will discuss the importance of arts education in schools and the role of the artist, arts organizations, government and schools in education. The panel will also focus on two programs soon to be piloted in New Brunswick schools: Learning through the Arts (LTTA) and ArtsSmarts. Panelists are: Dr. Eric Favaro, arts education consultant; Hon. Kelly Lamrock, Minister of Education, Province of New Brunswick; Andrea Scott, artistic director, Port City Dance Academy; Kate Elman-Wilcott, executive director, InterAction Children's Theatre; and Michael Molloy, fine arts consultant, School District 8. * Wednesday: Forest Glen Community Centre, 651 Westmorland Rd., Saint John, hosts Treble Clef. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and concert begins at 7 p.m. Guests include Shirley Cochrane and musical group Just the Four of Us. Tickets are $10 at the door. Please use playground entrance of Forest Hills School. This is a charitable event with proceeds going toward breast cancer research.

Symphony New Brunswick presents 'Love Opera' beginning at 8 p.m. at the Imperial Theatre in Saint John. Let the soloists take you away to the most famous opera love stories from Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Lehar, Bernstein, Mozart and more. It features conductor Stephane Laforest, baritone John Avey and soprano Christiane Riel. Tickets - adults $40; seniors $35; and students $10 - can be purchased at the Imperial Theatre box office.

* Thursday: The St. Andrews Farmers Market opens for the season from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The St. Andrews Farmers Market is located in Market Square, near the corner of King Street and Water Street.

Harbour View High School in Saint John presents a concert beginning at 6:30 p.m. to help raise funds to send the Harbour View Choral Ensemble on its 2009 tour of Italy. Performing in the concert will be the Harbour View Choral Ensemble, Harbour View Jazz Choir and Harbour View Stage Band. General admission is $10 ($5 for students and $20 for families). * Friday: Backstreet Records presents For the Sake of the Song at 124 Germain St., Saint John, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Three to five singer-songwriters are featured each week. Music lovers of all ages welcome.

Gallery 78 presents 'Some Trees,' an exhibition of monotypes by Francis Wishart, beginning today. This internationally celebrated artist, who divides his time between Nigadoo and Provence, France, has captured the essence of the forests of Northern New Brunswick. This collection of images is at once fragile and bold, subtle and inescapable like the land itself. The elusive technique of monotype renders the already interesting subject matter magically beautiful. With work in galleries like the Met and MOMA, Gallery 78 is very proud to present this important artist's work in New Brunswick. Also opening this weekend at Gallery 78, 'Drawing the Myth' from 2006 Strathbutler Award winner Brigitte Clavette.

* Saturday, May 30: Choeur de Soulanges celebrates the Fredericton francophone choir's 35th anniversary with a concert at Bernard-Poirier Theatre, Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne, Priestman St., at 8 p.m. A wine and cheese reception will conclude the festivities. Tickets, $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, are available at the door and from choir members. For more information call 261-0608.

Wai-Chung (Rachel) Kwan, pianist and singer, performs 'Book Re-View,' a musical evening in the 'Love to Share' series presented at Saint John Arts Centre, 20 Hazen Ave., at 7 p.m. Tickets, $15 for adults and $10 for students, are available in advance and at the door. * Ongoing: 'Observanda,' an exhibition on view at the Owens Art Gallery, features art works, notebooks and archival material highlighting the processes and accomplishments of the students and faculty of the Mount Allison Ladies' College, which was active between 1854 and 1937. Artists in the show include Ethel Ogden, Christian McKiel, Elizabeth McLeod and Sarah Hart. 'Observandra' is showing at the Owens Art Gallery until June 28.
