Agenda is Salon's weekly look at what's going on around the province.
Pick of the week: The Saint John Theatre Company presents 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' at the Imperial Theatre, 24 King Square South, Saint John, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Shows begin at 8 p.m. nightly. On Saturday, May 23, there is also a matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets - adults $27.50 for evening show or $22 for matinee; seniors $24.50 for evening show or $22 for matinee; students $16 - are available at the Imperial Theatre box office or by calling 674-4100.
* Today: Clyde Wray, Kelli Wray and Gord Halvorsen present 'The Night' at the Saint John Arts Centre at 7 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday. 'The Night' offers a fluid blend of music, dance and poetry. Tickets $10. Limited seating. Reserve tickets by contacting the SJAC at 633-4870.
The not-for-profit community radio station CFMH 107.3fm will be live all day at the Saint John City Market and will keep airing into the night at A Khord, 30 Water St. as part of its fundrive. Bands performing at A Khord include Natural Lines of Division and Andrew Devillers. The acoustic portion starts at 8 p.m. All proceeds go to the artists and CFMH 107.3fm.
Maria Osende Flamenco and Company performs 'Por Amor al Arte' ('For the Love of Art') at the Imperial Theatre at 8 p.m. Musicians, singers and dancers accompany the spellbinding flamenco dancer Maria Osende as they explore the seductive qualities of flamenco. Ingrid Mueller Art and Concepts, 117 York St., Fredericton, presents an open house and meet and greet with artist Catherine Hale from 2 to 5 p.m. Hale will provide insight into her art practice and give a tour of her sculptural works. All are welcome.
Port City Dance Academy presents its annual Spring Recital at Theatre Louis Vermeersch (École Samuel de Champlain) at 3 p.m. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for adults and $7 for children.
Marysville Hertiage Centre, 11 McGloin St., Fredericton presents a country concert featuring the group Classic Country as well as special gusts Allison Inch, Candace Phillips and Oland Monteith. Show begins at 7 p.m. and admission is $7.50 at the door.
* Sunday: The Saint John Heritage Development Board presents a Historic Places Walking Tour on the city's lower west side from 2 to 3:30 pm. Participants are asked to meet at Carleton Community Centre, Market Place. Rain date is Monday at 7 p.m. The free walking tour is led by Saint John storyteller and historian David Goss. Participants are also invited to attend a Historic Places Community Meeting on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Hall, Chapel Street. The next tour: Old North End, Sunday, May 24. * Monday: Loyalist Day celebrations mark the 226th anniversary of the landing of the first Loyalist fleet in 1783. Festivities begin at City Hall Plaza, 15 Market Sq., Saint John, at 10 a.m. with a proclamation of the town crier, flag raising and the placing of geraniums around the Loyalist Rock. At noon, the 3rd Field Artillery Regiment will fire artillery guns at Fort Howe. The Loyalist House and the New Brunswick Museum will also be open to the public with free admission in the afternoon.
* Tuesday: Crofts/Adams/Pearse Trio perform in the Empress Theatre, 811 Main St., Moncton, as part of RE:FLUX 09, a festival of music and sound art, presented annually by Galerie Sans Nom. The Crofts/Adams/Pearse Trio features three of Eastern Canada's most active and exciting musicians in improvised music. Show begins at 8 p.m. and admission is $5.
* Wednesday: 'Ten Second Epic' is performed in Riverview at the Dan Bohan Centre, 5 Fatima Dr., beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets - $10 in advance - are available at Reads Newsstand, www.ticketpro.ca or by calling 1-888-311-9090. Show is for all ages.
Gallery Connexion presents 25 salmon sculptures by 24 artists of the region at the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre, 1350 Regent St., Fredericton, until June 4. * Thursday: The Fredericton Playhouse, 686 Queen St., hosts Diamond Show 2009 presented by YMCA/Bonnie Kilburn beginning at 6:30 p.m. as well as Friday at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are: adults $17; seniors $15; and students $15.
The Notable Acts Theatre Festival hosts the 'Playwrights of Spring,' an evening of play readings in support of New Brunswick's finest playwrights, beginning at 8 p.m., at the James Joyce Pub in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 659 Queen St., Fredericton. Admission is $8 and helps support Notable Acts' ongoing mandate of fostering the province's playwrights. Featured are Matthew Heiti, Kari Trogen, Erin Keating, Mark Blagrave and Marcel-Romain Theriault.
* Friday: Backstreet Records presents 'For the Sake of the Song' at 124 Germain St., Saint John, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Three to five singer-songwriters are featured each week. Music lovers of all ages welcome.
The New Brunswick Crafts Council opens 'Vase' a group exhibition from 5 to 7 p.m. at the New Brunswick Crafts Council Fine Craft Gallery, in Room 103 of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. Step into the spring spirit and view and purchase unique handmade vessels made by members of the New Brunswick Crafts Council. Celebrate the arrival of spring and its floral splendour. The UNB Art Centre, Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Dr., Fredericton, showcases contemporary artworks in an exhibition of New Brunswick Art Bank Acquisitions. The exhibit opens today at 5 p.m. Featured artists include Craig Schneider, Jacques Arseneault, Jennifer Bélanger, Jack Bishop, Mario Doucette, Elizabeth Grant, Chris Lloyd, Peter Manchester, Geordie Miller, Dennis Austin Reid and Anna Torma. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
The City's Cultural Affairs Office presents an opening reception for 'Eviscera' - corporeal assemblage, sculpture and wall works by New Brunswick artists Carol Collicutt and WhiteFeather at the City of Saint John Gallery, Saint John Arts Centre, 20 Hazen Ave., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Everyone welcome. The Saint John Arts Centre, 20 Hazen Ave., also opens 'Through the Eyes; A Look at our World through the Eyes of Animals,' a solo show by Patty Pendleton of Deer Island (18 original acrylic pieces) at 5:30 p.m. Exhibition continues until July 4.
Marilyn Crispell performs at the Empress Theatre, 811 Main St., Moncton, as part of RE:FLUX 09. Marilin Crispell is a jazz pianist from Woodstock, New York with a style that is both lyrical and uncompromising. Showtime is 8 p.m. and admission is $12.
* Saturday, May 23: M.*.O. Pottery presents its seasonal opening sale from noon to 6 p.m. Take a scenic drive on the Old River Road (Rte. 102) and visit Darren Emenau at M.*.O. Pottery Gallery. Indulge in refreshments and music and take advantage of deals of up to 50 per cent off. Emenau will feature unique works made of locally dug clays fired in his outdoor wood kiln. The first annual 'Raise the Roof' concert takes place at St. John the Baptist Church, 54 Broad St., Saint John. Featured artists are Susan Killen, Elizabeth Cormier, Marilyn Williams, Christopher Lane, Aussiecots Duo and students of Mitchell Music Studio. Concert begins at 7 p.m. Free-will offering. Reception and silent auction follows. All proceeds go to the St. John the Baptist building fund.
The winner of the 2009 Legacy Sculpture Competition is being announced at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, 703 Queen St., Fredericton. Three artists, Luc Charette, John Mutch and André Lapointe are the chosen finalists. The winner will have three months to fabricate and install work that will be unveiled at a public presentation on Sept. 16 at the 50th anniversary of the gallery.
