1. Stone to the Bone - James Brown
Nothing makes your head bop like a good funk tune, and this is a damn good funk tune.
2. Memphis Soul Stew (Live) - King Curtis
The buildup as King introduces each of his incredibly talented band members is sick. They don't play R&B like this anymore.
3. Dark Angel - Blue Rodeo
A haunting, beautiful and amazingly written song. I still enjoy it just as I did when I first heard it. Maybe that's because I play it less"‚."‚."‚.
4. Robot Portrait - Quincy Jones
From the Quintessence, a 1961 jazz album by super producer Quincy Jones. Robot Portrait has some of the best solos and arrangements on the album.
5. House of Cards - Radiohead
I'm in the minority since I'm not a Radiohead fan, but this is a wonderful song about fragility and risk.
6. Free Fallin' (Live) - John Mayer
His cheesy pop songs have limited the respect he deserves for his musicianship. This is a cover of the Tom Petty classic.
7. This Christmas - Jill Barber
I heard this song on CBC radio last Christmas. I sent Jill Barber a random email asking where I could find it and she responded by putting it up on her site as a free download.
8. 100 Days, 100 Nights - Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
Sharon Jones has one of the most distinctive voices of any artist I've heard lately. And her band has a rocking horns section. Harvest Jazz and Blues needs to bring her to town.
9. Business Week and The New Yorker weekly podcasts
I drive a lot with work across the region and these are two weekly podcasts I listen to in the car. Business Week helps me keep up with what's happening in the business world, and the New Yorker is candy for the brain.
10. Loungin' - Guru as Jazzmatazz with Donald Byrd
From one of the first albums to combine a live jazz band with hip hop and rap. This lead track is the kind of song you can play while setting up the party, at the party, and at the after party - high utility.
