Hearing set on sex assault charge

BURTON - An American man accused of sexual assault in Oromocto will have a preliminary hearing early next year. Chancellor Scott Baker, 26, of Caldwell, Id., appeared briefly Wednesday in Burton Provincial Court to re-elect his mode of trial to judge and jury A preliminary hearing was set for Jan. 20 Baker and his wife Alisha Deann (Ritz) Baker, 27, were arrested in Saint John on Aug. 18 after a report of a hit and run. Alisha Baker pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident and was sentenced in September to two months in jail. The Bakers are also wanted in the United States on April 10 charges of first-degree kidnapping and aggravated battery in Nampa, Idaho.

Council wants mine soil study reopened

FREDERICTON - Following growing evidence inorganic lead could cause cancer, the Conservation Council of New Brunswick wants the health department to reopen a 2008 Xstrata mine soil study. The council says the Bathurst mine study didn't examine the cancer effects of lead. Inorganic lead such as lead sulphate, lead oxide and lead arsenate are now viewed as probable cancer-causing substances, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It recently has been found in a wide range of imported children's toys, prompting massive product recalls.

Provincial employers attending career fair

FREDERICTON - Eight provincial employers have joined the Population Growth Secretariat at a career fair under way in Toronto to encourage job seekers to try New Brunswick. The New Brunswick employers looking to fill between 30-45 positions are Spielo, Professional Quality Assurance, Medavie Blue Cross, McCain Foods Ltd., J.D. Irving Ltd., the City of Moncton, Enterprise Fredericton, and Enterprise Saint John. The number of employers at the fair is up from six last year.

Missing

Police launch search for elderly man

CARAQUET - Police are searching for an elderly resident of Bas Caraquet whose vehicle was found deserted on a local wharf. Jean-Eudes Légère, 77, was reported missing on Nov. 14 after his car was found on the Bas-Caraquet wharf. Relatives say he suffers from heart problems. Légère wears glasses and has grey, thinning hair.

NB Liquor festival kicks off Thursday

FREDERICTON - NB Liquor kicks off its popular 13th annual Spirits Festival on Thursday. The event, formerly known as the Whisky, Spirits and Liqueur Festival, will be held at the Delta Hotel in Fredericton. It will showcase 167 premium products, including whiskies, rums, vodkas, gins, liqueurs and other spirits. The festival will be launched with mixing classes and a tasting of premium Scotch whisky.
