The Campobello Island Vikings turned their long drives into another provincial title Monday, claiming the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association's AA boys golf championship by the narrowest of margins at Pine Needles Golf Course in Shediac Monday.

The Vikings squad of Gordon Kay, Cody Morton, Brendan Allingham, Daniel van Tassel and Cameron Parker shot a team score of 259, good for a one-shot victory over Rothesay Netherwood and two shots over Sugarloaf High for their second straight title.

Last year, the school claimed its first-ever golf championship when it won the Class A crown. With realignment of conferences prior to the start of the school year, the Vikings moved to the AA class but won the crown again, albeit in a dramatic fashion.

"It feels good," said Kay, a Grade 10 student who golfs out of Herring Cove Provincial Park. "I hope there are more."

There could be as Kay, Morton, Allingham and van Tassel are all expected back next year.

Kay fired the low individual score of the day - 80 - in the AA class on a cool round that featured some wind gusts near the end of the round.

Morton shot 84 and Allingham 95 as those three scores counted toward the team score.

"We were confident," Kay explained. "We won last year and while we were second at the regionals, we didn't feel we golfed that well so we felt we could do better."

In the AAA division, Mathieu-Martin earned the championship with a convincing 14-shot victory at 241

Harrison Trimble and Fredericton High tied for second at 255 but Harrison Trimble got the runner-up spot in a tie-breaker (using the score of the fourth-place finisher on the team).

Justin Richard of Mathieu-Martin fired the low individual score at 78.
