MILAN, Italy - The Fendi collection was the most eccentric seen thus far on the Milan summer runway.

Models with pale makeup and wildly pinned-up hair wore futuristic dresses made up of cut-out lace in icy pastels or black, cinched tightly at the waist in an elastic cummerbund with a circular geometric figure for decoration. The collection might have been offbeat, but the overall effect did not stray from the elegant yet easygoing look preferred by Italian designers for the summer of 2009.

Footwear at Fendi was strangely calm for the house that made metal ankle straps a fashion fetish. The favourite look was an open-toed saddle shoe with a comfortable platform.

The latest Fendi bags, by second-generation Silvia Fendi Venturini, designer for the label, are a series of stiff clutch bags, including one that resembles a metal lock.

A decade ago, Venturini breathed new life into the aging company when she designed the small "baguette" bag, a play on words as well as a tribute to the French loaf of bread from which it drew inspiration.
