The awards are for students who have shown outstanding qualities throughout the school year while participating in NBIAA sports and are named in honour of Raymond Légère, a member of Moncton’s Wall of Fame as a builder and who taught physical education in many schools in New Brunswick.

In addition, the top two student athletes, one male and one female, in each school classification will also receive the William S. Ritchie Excellence Award in honour of William S. Ritchie, a member of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame and a past executive director of the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Additionally, Brent Evans of Leo Hayes High School in Fredericton will receive the Emery Johnson Memorial Award as the most sportsmanlike coach of the year, recognizing outstanding lifetime achievements toward students and the NBIAA school sports programs. This award is named after Emery Johnson, the former athletic director of Dalhousie Regional High School and NBIAA executive member, who passed away in November 2003.

Further, three teams will receive team sportsmanship of the year awards, which recognize a team whose athletes, coaches and fans promote what sportsmanship is all about in every aspect of high school athletics. This year’s winners are from the Northern Conference, École Secondaire Népisiguit – Cross Country, the Eastern Conference, Riverview High School – Junior Girls Basketball, and from the Western Conference, Leo Hayes High School – Baseball.
