early on Monday morning.

Ronald Cormier, chief of the Cap-Acadie Fire Department, said they got the call about a fire at a smokehouse in Petit-Cap shortly after 4 a.m.

The building that caught fire was an old smokehouse being used to store wood, and Cormier said there were several employees at the scene at the time of the fire, but there were no injuries.

The smokehouse belonged to Canadian Silver Herring Ltd., which is owned by M. LeBlanc Fisheries Ltd. Brunswick News asked has the fishery for comment.

Cormier said the wood storage building was destroyed, but they managed to save two other nearby buildings, including one that housed the warehouse where they process the fish.

The smokehouse was the site of another fire in 2021 when it was operating under the name Botsford Fisheries.

The cause of Monday’s fire is not yet known and remains under investigation, said Cormier.

“I don’t think it’s suspicious,” he said.

Firefighters from two Cap-Acadie stations responded to the blaze, as well as departments in Shediac and Port Elgin, said Cormier.

Anthony Azard, CEO of the Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement that although the fire that occurred in a shed at Canadian Silver Herring was “relatively minor,” it is not expected to significantly disrupt the business’s operations.

“Certainly, it is a distressing experience for any business owner to face the sight of their assets being damaged by fire,” said Azard. “We extend our deepest empathy to those affected by such an unfortunate event and understand the emotional and financial strain it can cause.”

Azard said the Chamber stands ready to offer its support and resources to the business owner when the time is right, to make sure they have the guidance necessary to navigate through the challenging circumstance.

He also thanked to the fire response teams for their “prompt and efficient action” in addressing the incident.
