GET 'LOST IN AUSTEN' WITH SERIES AND FILMS
Published Saturday December 27th, 2008

Here's what's happening today on the small screen:
Saturday
* Lost in Austen sees a woman who worships the novels of Jane Austen being transported to the world of the 1813 story Pride and Prejudice, where she swaps places with the protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet. A critical success in the U.K., the four-part miniseries will air in two parts tonight and tomorrow night. (W Network)
* Each episode of the Lost in Austen miniseries will be combined with a classic Jane Austen movie. Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Toni Collette, airs tonight, as does Pride and Prejudice, for which Keira Knightley got a best actress Oscar nomination. Pride and Prejudice will be repeated tomorrow before Sense and Sensibility, which earned Emma Thompson an Oscar for best screenplay. Thompson was also nominated for a best actress Oscar for the film, while Kate Winslet was nominated for best supporting actress. (W Network)
* Mystic Pizza is a charming film that launched Julia Roberts's career. The megastar was just 21 when she played the bombshell sister of Annabeth Gish and Lili Taylor, who all worked at a pizza shop in Mystic, Conn. Roberts won an Independent Spirit Award for best female lead in the touching 1988 romantic comedy. (Cosmo)
* Saturday Night Live is a repeat but a good one, with Ben Affleck in the role of guest host and American Idol winner David Cook steaming up the stage with his sexy rock. (Global, NBC)
Sunday
* If watching films, vegging on the couch and hearing uplifting tunes are a few of your favourite things this holiday weekend, then keep the channel locked on The Sound of Music. The Oscar-winning musical, which includes such time-honoured songs as My Favourite Things, stars Julie Andrews as a nun-turned-governess caring for the children of Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) in 1930s Austria. (CTV)
* Fact & Film Week, starting tonight, is a special block of programming featuring documentaries that chronicle world events. The docs are then followed by a blockbuster film inspired by the same event. Highlights include The Da Vinci Code, Kingdom of Heaven and The Perfect Storm. (History Television)
* Screen legend Meryl Streep is featured in a double bill of two of her lesser-known films. Dancing at Lughnasa is about a boy growing up with his mother and four spinster aunts, and Heartburn is a romantic comedy starring Streep and Jack Nicholson as married journalists. (Viva)
* The eight-part mockumentary comedy Summer Heights North wraps up with narcissistic drama teacher Mr. G premiering his new musical. Spoiled teen Ja'mie King, meanwhile, needs a new date for the formal after lying about her sexuality. (HBO Canada)
* Another choice feature is the quirky comedy Ghost World, starring Scarlett Johansson and Thora Birch as misfit teens who play a prank on a middle-aged geek after graduating from high school. (Citytv)
