The Saint John Branch of the Arthritis Society hosts Arthritis and Your Back, a free presentation by Dr. Edward Abraham, an orthopaedic surgeon from the Saint John Regional Hospital, at the Simonds Lions Auditorium at Loch Lomond Villa. Register after 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. presentation, followed by a coffee/tea reception at 8 p.m.

A Look Good Feel Better workshop will soon take place Fredericton. This two-hour session will put you back in control of the way you look during your cancer treatments using cosmetic and hair alternatives. Plus, at the workshop you will benefit from the shared experiences of other women with cancer and go home with a complimentary kit of quality cosmetics. The Saint John String Quartet presents Up And Coming with the Virtuoso Series at 8 p.m. at the Saint John Arts Centre. Along with the quartet, guest piano soloist Julien LeBlanc will perform. The program includes Variations on a theme by Benjamin Britten for piano and strings by G. Kulesha; La Oracion del Torero by Turina; and, Piano Quintet in E flat Major Op. 44 by R. Schumann. Mark Blagrave reads from Silver Salts at Owens Art Gallery, Mount Allison University, Sackville at 4:30 p.m. Copies of Silver Salts, named for the chemical process used to produce films in the early 20th century, will be for sale at the launch and in bookstores. Silver Salts is the story of a young New Brunswick woman's struggles to establish an identity for herself in an age when mass destruction, mass production, and the mechanical reproduction of sound and image all threaten to make that impossible.

Galerie Sans Nom invites you to the opening of RE:FLUX 08, Festival of Music and Sound Art at 5 p.m. at St. James Gate, 14 Church St., Moncton. There will be an Arts Community Forum called Towards a United Voice at 7 p.m. at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, 732 Charlotte St., Fredericton, to discuss the development of a New Brunswick Provincial Arts Organization. The organization's proposed intent is to operate in the English language, represent professional artists from all cultures, all disciplines and focus on their needs, be inclusive of emerging artists, amateur artists and friends of the arts and work in partnership with the sister francophone provincial organization.

University of New Brunswick professor Ricardo Duschesne presents the first in a series of three free lectures over three weeks at the New Brunswick Museum, Market Square, Saint John beginning at 7 p.m. This week, Duschesne examines the historical geography of the West; where Western civilization originated and developed. Podium 2008: Choral Waves - Ondes Chorales, the New Brunswick Choral Federation Conference takes place at Mount Allison University in Sackville with three evening concerts today, Friday and Sunday at Convocation Hall at 8 p.m. Tonight it's Rajaton, a unique group from Finland. On Friday, the National Youth Choir will perform. At the Choral Keynote concert on Friday, May 16 at 11:15 a.m., Mount Allison alumna Lydia Adams will conduct the Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto, the Elliott Chorale, and St. Mary's Children's Choir, in Music and the Artist: A Portrait of Canada through the eyes of Canadian Artist Doris McCarthy. Putting Ideas on Paper: 25th Annual Inkshed Working Conference takes place at St. Thomas University Fredericton today through to Sunday. Inkshedding is similar to freewriting, which is when a person writes continuously for a predetermined amount of time. Writers use this technique to escape writer's block. Freewriting isn't usually shared with others. Inkshedding, on the other hand, is meant to be read, and is used to exchange ideas with others.
