Would you please identify these beautiful butterflies that were enjoying our fall asters at the cottage in St. Andrews? – David and Janice Hashey, Fredericton This butterfly is known as the American lady or sometimes American painted lady. This species does not over-winter in New Brunswick, but migrates in from more southerly areas each year. Some years it is quite abundant, other years rare. The larvae feed on various plants of the aster family, including the pearly everlasting, a common roadside plant. – Don McAlpine
