Pair admit theft of catalytic converters

GRAND BAY-WESTFIELD - Grand Bay-Westfield RCMP have solved the disappearance of several catalytic converters from a commercial garage on the Weatherhead Road in Nerepis. Two Grand Bay-Westfield men - Brian Vincent Alward, 27, and Kevin Paul Dick, 25 - were arrested and pleaded guilty in Hampton provincial court to theft. The pair were arrested Tuesday after police received a report of suspicious activity around the garage that had been recently hit for the converters. Alward, who was already on house arrest after a previous conviction, had his conditional sentence revoked and will serve out that sentence in jail until March 1, 2009. For the new theft charge, he received a three-month jail sentence to be served concurrently. Dick will be sentenced in Hampton court on Oct. 1. Sgt. Gary Fournier said the white 2004 Chev Impala the pair was travelling in was seen leaving the garage property shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday and soon located by police. As a result, the vehicle was seized and three catalytic converters recovered.

Flea market

Police probe two pettty crimes

SUSSEX - While movement through Sussex was slow over the weekend during the giant flea market, police say it was quiet for police with the exception of two petty crimes. Cpl. Phil Oliver said on Friday just after noon, a Sussex area man was charged with theft. Oliver said the 19-year-old man is accused of stealing a vaporizer from a vendor's booth. His court date has not been released. "The flea market is relatively quiet for us, usually there's only the traffic-related issues," Oliver said. On Sunday just before 2 p.m., Oliver said police were called again to the flea market grounds. Someone had entered an unlocked vehicle parked at the event and stolen its inspection sticker. That file has been closed with no arrests.
