Security drill set for Point Lepreau

FREDERICTON - The Point Lepreau generating station will participate in a one-day security exercise today. Area residents may see emergency response vehicles in the community, and hear radio communications simulating a security event at the station. The exercise will involve the Nuclear Response Force team and will test security procedures. The station conducts regular emergency drills.

Pair sentenced for drug trafficking

MONCTON - Kevin Leger of McIntosh Hill, 38, and Charles Comeau, 48, of Cocagne were sentenced in Shediac provincial court Wednesday on charges related to drug trafficking. Leger was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison and ordered to pay a fine in the amount of $50,000 for conspiring to produce and conspiring to traffic marijuana. He pleaded guilty to all charges. Comeau, who also pleaded guilty, was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison.

Education

Graduates apply for loan debt reduction

FREDERICTON - More than 350 post-secondary graduates have taken advantage of a debt-reduction program, Post-Secondary Education Minister Donald Arseneault says. The program, for students who finish their studies with loans in excess of $26,000, has reduced student debt loads on average by about $11,000, bringing them closer to the national average of $24,000.
