Beaver Harbour woman will challenge Thompson in next federal election

ST. GEORGE - New Brunswick Southwest Liberals picked Kelly Wilson from Beaver Harbour to challenge Veterans Affairs Minister Greg Thompson in the next federal election.
Nobody else filed papers ahead of the 14-day deadline leading up to the nomination convention Saturday afternoon at the St. George Curling Club.
Saint John East MLA and former cabinet minister Roly MacIntyre spoke at the event at the St. George Curling Club.
Wilson, executive director of the John Howard Society of Charlotte County, faces an uphill battle against Thompson, a veteran MP who steam-rolled Liberal Nancy MacIntosh 17,476 votes to 5,863 in the Oct. 14, 2008, federal general election.
Thompson, an MP for 17 years, has won six of the seven elections he has contested since 1988. He lost to the late Woodstock Mayor Harold Culbert in 1993 but came back in 1997. Thompson won the last three elections, in 2004, 2006 and 2008, with absolute majorities of all votes cast.
Thompson clearly enjoys his role as a cabinet minister and plans to run again.
Wilson feels she can contribute in national politics, and decided on the Liberals through her association with former Moncton MP Claudette Bradshaw.
She is already travelling around the sprawling riding she hopes to win, visiting Queenstown, Grand Manan and points in between, she said in an interview. Andrea Card of St. George is her campaign manager, Blake Henry her official agent.
